Today I learned about the origin of the peace sign from National Geographic.
Turns out Gerald Holtom, in 1958, combined the semaphore initials for Nuclear Disarmament (ND, respectively below) to shape what we now know as the symbol for "peace." He said that the N also represented an individual, palms down, in an expression of despair.
It was first designed for the April 4th march of the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War (DAC) from Trafalgar Square, London to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston, England.
