Ratties

So, on the 21st I got myself a pet rat. I named him Marty. Two days after I got home and got him all set up, I got to thinking that maybe I should have bought his brother too... but I hadn't realized that rats were social animals. All I remembered was something about hamsters (hamsters hate each other with a passion) at the time.

So I phoned up Petcetera to ask if they still had the other one... and he was already sold. Nuts. So today I phoned up a shop that is much close and more accessible to me and asked if they had any rats. They had two male hairless rats. I wasn't interested in a hairless as I like my pets to have fur. So I waited a few days and called them this morning and they had one of the hairless still, and had recieved a shipment of baby boys with hair and only had one left. I asked the girl to hold onto it for me, I would be down as soon as I could to check him out. I had to get some more bedding anyway and wanted to get a couple of toys too.

I went to the pet store. I saw the little guy and held him and decided that I wanted him. He has a light grey hood. The majority of his fur including his legs is all white and there are a couple of grey spots on his back not connected to the hood and he has a little white stripe on his forehead and nose.

Right now I have him in the transport box I brought Marty home in (it is a Sterilite 12qt plastic container with wire at the top). I put in some of Martys smelly bedding and droppings to get the new rat used to the smell and to get Martys scent on him. I gave him a couple of peas to nibble on too.

Before I put the bedding in, the new guy widdled, so I soaked it up in a bit of toilet paper and put that into Martys cage to get him used to another rats pee. He was sniffing that TP like mad and looked so excited. He dragged it into his house right away and then came back out looking around (maybe to find the new rat) so I took him out of his cage (this was just before I put the peas in the temporary cage) and let him walk around on the wire on the temp cage.

They sniffed each other through the wire and seemed ok with each other, so I picked Marty up and put him down in the temp cage and they started sniffin' each other all over it was cute. The new guy kept looking for nipples on Marty though. XD I guess he misses his mom. He is only 5 weeks, where Marty is 13 weeks.

I put Marty back in his cage and now I am letting the baby eat his peas.
