A few more Scheveningen-by-night pictures to go with the
apocalyptic-sunset pictures I posted last night...
Scheveningen is the beach closest to The Hague, where I live. It used to be a fashionable seaside resort. These days it's not so fashionable any more (who wants to go to Scheveningen when they can go to Bora Bora?), but it still has a lot of popular beachside restaurants. The large building you can see on the left is the old Kurhaus. Once upon a time, the Dutch seaside was full of such grand hotels, but during World War II, when Holland was occupied by the Germans, the German army pulled most of them down to make place for bunkers. This is one of the few they left standing. Back in 1964, the Rolling Stones gave a legendary concert here which had to be cancelled after just four songs because the fans were breaking up the building, tearing chandeliers from the ceiling, et cetera -- further proof to the Dutch establishment that rock music was eeeeeeevil. Since then, no pop groups or rock bands have been allowed to play gigs at the venue, which is a bit small for them, anyway.
The (mostly empty) restaurant at the end of the pier, shot from another part of the pier.
The beach and the Kurhaus from the beginning of the pier.
On the way down from the promenade to the beach itself...
