Summary: Yamada's dying. He just wants to help Daiki move on.

“Explain what?” Daiki asked in what Takaki perceived to be annoyance. He stared at Yabu. “What?”

“How about explaining why you had drunk yourself silly?” Hikaru suggested not so nicely and Takaki was worried that Yamada might just murder the older guy, ghost or not.

“I wonder,” Daiki replied noncommittally and looked away from the others.
“Daichan,” Hikaru said, much more tenderly than Takaki expected and was shocked that Hikaru even went to sit beside Daiki on the bed. “I’m sorry for sounding so mean and angry okay?”
Daiki turned and look at Hikaru with a pout on his face. Hikaru smiled lightly.

“But you must tell us okay? Or we can’t help you.”

“I miss Ryosuke, I miss him so much it’s killing me to know that he’s no longer here,” Daiki muttered quietly and that response silenced everyone in the room. Daiki looked up at Hikaru. “It hurts.”

Then he yelled.

“It hurts so much that I can’t even breathe anymore!”

At that the occupants of the room fell silent as they digested the new information. Takaki knew that Daiki had never let go of Yamada but he never knew that it was to such a serious extent though there were some obvious hints now that he thought of it.

He glanced at Yamada who was staring at the older boy with a worried frown. Takaki thought that Yamada would give anything in the world just to be able to hold Daiki in his arms once more. Unfortunately there was nothing that he could offer…

“Aww Daiki,” Inoo said as he sat down beside the younger BEST member and pulled him into a tight hug. “We’ll help you okay? All you had to was ask. We would have helped you from the start. Why? Why did you have to keep everything to yourself?”

He brushed a stray bang away from Daiki’s face.

“Because I didn’t believe that he’s dead Kei… I don’t want to believe that he’s dead,” Daiki answered, a few stray tears making their way down his cheek. “I hate to even think about it.”

Inoo pulled Daiki back into his embrace and cradled his head as a mother would to a child as he whispered empty words of comforts and sweet assurances which were nothing more than lies disguised. But that was the only way to calm the wretched boy in his arms.

Soon enough Daiki fell into a slumber. Inoo tucked him into the bed gently before letting out a sigh and turning to the other four with a frown creasing his eyebrows.

“Now what?” he mouthed.

Yabu signaled to the door. With muffled steps and heavy thoughts, they exited Yabu’s room and padded to the living room where Yabu switched on a small light.

“Now what?” Inoo repeated as he threw himself down on the nearest couch.

“You two knew about his condition before this.” Hikaru accused. “Why didn’t you say anything?”

“We didn’t want you two to worry,” Yabu explained, scratching the back of his head. “I guess that it was wrong of us.”

“And stupid too!” Inoo retorted in a harsh whisper.

“Let’s not argue about that,” Takaki interrupted. “We should be talking about how to help him.”
“Yuya’s right,” Yabu said with a small sigh. “Firstly I don’t think he’s in any condition to be alone. Who knows what stupid things he might do…”
“We won’t be able to watch him all the time though,” Hikaru pointed out.

Yabu let out a long sigh and closed his eyes. This was going to be harder than he thought.

In the end they decided that they would take turns to keep Daiki company during work and since the majority of their time was spent at work Daiki would rarely have the chance to be alone. They would go ask his parents and brother for help for the time that he spent at home.

“But he must have to have some alone time too,” Hikaru added in as they made their way back upstairs. “Or he’ll be suspicious and we really wouldn’t want that.”

The others all gave their silent assents.

Yabu opened the door quietly and the others filed into the room softly so that they would not rouse the sleeping boy. Yabu grabbed the spare futons from his closet and spread them out on the floor. It was no doubt a bit cramped but they would have to make do.

Takaki laid down on the futon closest to him and was about to drift off into another dimension before he snapped open his eyes with a start. He was so wrapped up in the conversation just now that he completely forgot all about Yamada. He tried looking around for any traces of the younger boy when something caught his attention at the corner of his eyes.

He turned his gaze to the bed where Daiki was occupying and froze. Yamada was sleeping next to Daiki and had his arms wrapped protectively around the older boy with his eyes closed as if he was sleeping. Takaki did not know if Daiki was able to feel Yamada but it certainly seemed that way, since he was snuggling up to the other.

Takaki bit on his lower lip and turned away from the sight. He lifted a hand and swept the tears away.

Why did Yamada have to die?

--

Takaki had no idea what time it was when he woke up but Yabu, Hikaru and Inoo were already gone by then. He groaned and got up before a brightly yellow coloured post-it caught his attention. He strode over to the door and stared at the messy scrawl which belonged to Yabu.

We’re going out to get some breakfast, Yuya. Take care of Daichan while we’re gone okay?

Takaki nodded to himself before he remembered about Yamada. He quickly spun around to check whether the ghost boy was still there but all he saw was Daiki. He walked over to the younger one and smiled lightly, before patting his head gently.

After washing up, Takaki went back to the room and saw that Daiki was already awake and sitting at the edge of the bed. He was holding his head in hands and groaned when he looked up.

“Morning,” Takaki greeted and walked over to the younger one.

“Good morning,” Daiki mumbled.

“Your head hurts?” Takaki guessed and sighed when Daiki nodded. “That was to be expected since you drank so much last night.”

Daiki flushed at the reminder of the previous night’s events and looked at Takaki.

“I’m really sorry! I was being stupid! I didn’t know what I was doing. Oh my gosh I’m so, so sorry,” Daiki rattled on and on, stopping only when Takaki placed a hand on his shoulder and shook his head, an amused glint in his eyes.

“Relax Daiki,” he said. “We don’t mind.”

At that, Daiki visibly relaxed and let out a sigh of relief.

“Thanks,” he said, a small smile on his lips. It was a far cry from his usual wide and cheery beam which brightness could match that of the sun’s but Takaki guessed that this would have to do for now.

“I’ll go wash up,” Daiki announced and got up.

On his way to the bathroom, he tripped over the tangled blankets on the ground. Takaki immediately rushed forward to catch the younger boy. He managed to stop Daiki’s fall and was about to let go when suddenly he felt a push on his back, causing him to lose his balance and fall on top of Daiki, with their lips pressed together.

Daiki’s eyes widened in shock and Takaki hurriedly got up, mumbling frantic apologies. Before Daiki had an opportunity to say anything, however, Takaki made up an excuse about needing to rush home and left the house, leaving a bewildered Daiki behind.
