The insistent banging of his front door was woke Kame up at the unholy hour of 4.30am in the morning. Having only gone to bed two hours earlier after showering and reading the next day’s schedule, Kame sat up in his bed groggily, annoyance being the only thing he was capable of feeling.
He wondered if the banging would go away if he did not budge. He waited for a few seconds and the knocking only increased in volume. Groaning loudly, he got off the bed and trudged wearily to the door. Not bothering who it was, he threw it open with every intention to shout at the person who disturbed him.
However, before he could even open his mouth, another voice had already started yelling.
“Kamenashi Kazuya, do you know how long I have been knocking on this damned door?! And you, you didn’t even have to courtesy to call out or anything?! For a moment, I thought you had died in your sleep! I was this close to calling the police!” Riko screamed, placing her index finger and thumb together to show just how close she really had been to calling the police. Her fingers were practically touching each other and her call phone was held in the other hand.
Kame’s eyes widened and all annoyance that he felt was tossed out of the nearest window when he saw that there were traces of tears on Riko’s face. Concern and worry overtook him and all the fatigue was replaced by a new found energy.
“Riko, what happened?” he asked, knowing that the female had already calmed down. She always did after a good rant.
“I don’t know what happened but Ryu suddenly felt so hot when I went to check on him. And he just wouldn’t wake up when I shook him. I didn’t know what to do and the first person I thought of was you so I came over,” Riko explained in a rush, desperate to let the other what was happening as soon as possible.
Kame nodded as he processed what she told him. With a few quick and long strides, he was in Ryu’s room. He picked the sleeping boy up and almost dropped him when he felt just how hot the boy was. He was practically burning like fire. Kame’s grip on the boy tightened and he hurriedly brought the boy out, shutting the door on his way out.
“Where are we going?” Riko asked as she followed Kame who was walking at lightning speed towards the lift.
“Hospital,” was the only thing that Kame said as Kame passed the child to her.
She took the boy from him and pressed the button as she anxiously waited for the lift to come up. Kame had gone to the door concealing the stairwell.
“Where are you going?” she asked.
“Wait for the lift here with Ryu,” he said, opening the door. “I’ll take the stairs and get the care first.”
“Wait, you’ll never - Kazuya!” Riko shouted as the man ignored her and dashed down the stairs, the door swinging to a shut behind him.
She glanced worriedly after him. There was no way Kame could get down and get the car before she went down. She just sighed as she entered the lift. She could always wait for Kame, she supposed.
Just as she stepped out of the building, a car pulled up in front of her and her eyes widened when she realised that it was Kame. She was so shocked that she just stood still but the shifting of Ryu made her rush into the passenger seat. Kame instantly drove off at a high speed. There were hardly any cars at that time anyway.
“How did you get the car so quickly?” Riko asked.
Kame glanced at her for a brief moment before turning his attention back to the road.
“Ri-chan, don’t underestimate me well you,” he replied. “I am more than capable of doing that.”
She scoffed, feeling better that at least Kame was calm and not as panicky as she was. This was one of the reasons why she thought of him first. The second was obvious; he lived next door.
“You reached just as I came down.”
“That just means that I have good time estimation,” he retorted smugly and Riko could only roll her eyes.
They reached the hospital in record time and Kame let her off at the entrance while he went to look for a parking lot. Kame quickly parked his car in a random lot and hurriedly went inside the hospital building and to the fifth floor where Riko was.
“How’s he?” Kame asked as he neared the female.
“The doctor said that he has a high fever, which is pretty obvious and that he ought to stay overnight to be observed,” she replied as a nurse gestured to her. “I’ll go complete the formalities.”
Kame watched her go as she sat down on one of the waiting chairs. He checked the clock perched on the wall. 6.45am, it read. Kame sighed. He wondered if he should take the day off. After all, he had to been in for work at eight that day for a meeting and there was no way that he was going to make it.
“What’s wrong?” Riko asked when she returned, noticing the frown on Kame’s face.
“I was just wondering if I should go to work,” he responded.
“Just go,” she said, smiling. “I’ll be fine.”
“You’re tired,” he pointed out.
She rolled her eyes and jabbed him in the ribs rather harshly.
“As if you aren’t!”
Kame had nothing to say to that for he was indeed tired. But he knew that he should stay. Riko was not very healthy and she fell sick easily. If she collapsed as well, who would look after Ryu? He had work practically every day and there was simply no time left for him to take care of the boy. Taking one day off was better than being absent for a week or more.
“No, it’s okay,” he said, placing a comforting on her shoulder. “I’ll stay.”
“Fine,” she huffed and sat next to him. Guilt crept through her; she knew the reason that he did not want to go to work was because of her.
“It’s not your fault,” Kame said. “I need a break too.”
And that was true, the full truth. After the incident with Jin the previous day, he did not want to see the other. Honestly, he wondered why he even did that in the first place. Why did he talk to Jin? He should have just ignored him as he always did. Then nothing would have happened.
“It’s not your fault,” Kame repeated once more, knowing that Riko was a stubborn cow.
“I know,” she snapped, even though she knew that she needed the reassurance. It was just the Ryu was sick and lying in the hospital bed and she did not know when he would recover.
“Don’t worry,” Kame said again, giving her shoulder a gentle squeeze before letting it fall back to his side.
Riko looked at him in amazement. Not for the first time, she found herself marvelling at how well Kame knew her. She knew that she was not a very predictable person from past experience so for Kame to know her as well as he did meant that he cared about her a lot to notice the little details that would tell what she was feeling. But it also meant that she cared a lot about him too. Because if she did not, he would not be beside her at that moment.
“Sorry,” she said after a while and Kame just gave her a small smile.
“Don’t you have to inform your manager or something?” she asked.
“I’ll call my manager later and I’ll call Tat-chan too.” Kame pulled a face. “I do not need him breathing down my neck about not informing him. Nakamaru too. It would be much better to inform them personally than let them know through my manager. I would get killed.”
Riko chuckled.
“What are you going to tell them?”
“I’m definitely not going to say that I am sick. The last time I said that, Tat-chan and Nakamaru charged to my house, bringing with them all sorts of exotic medicine that I have never seen before. Junno and Koki helped me with everything, even standing up. I was not that ill. And Ryo and Yamapi sent a message once every two minutes, along with the rest of NEWS. Then, Kanjani sent about twenty get well soon cards. Hey!Say!7 called me every hour or so to make sure that I was taking my medicine and they are younger than me. Hikaru, Inoo and Daiki messaged me all sort of weird ways to get well better. And Yabu and Takaki actually came over to my house to make sure that I was not dying. In conclusion, there is no way I am telling them that I am sick!”
Riko burst out laughing after Kame’s long rant. She knew that the Johnnys were annoying after hearing Kame complain about them ever so often but this was too much. But it was good to have so many people caring for you and she knew that Kame was happy even if he acted as if he was irritated.
“So what should I tell them?”
Riko could not help it. She burst out laughing again, making the other pout.
“What’s so funny?”
“Kazuya, you sound like a little child trying to skip classes. And when I say child, I mean one of three years old,” she replied, giggling.
“You’re not very mature yourself,” Kame retorted childishly and promptly stuck his tongue out.
“Why thank you,” she replied, sarcasm laced in her voice, showing pointedly just how well she agreed with his point.
Kame chose to ignore her and continued pondering on his excuse. After a while, he sighed and turned to Riko.
“I really feel like a child trying to skip classes.”
“You can just tell them you have to go visit your grandmother or something. Say that she’s sick?” Riko suggested.
“I supposed I could...” Kame mumbled and pulled out his hand phone, messaging both Ueda and Nakamaru.
Instantly, he got replies from them both.

Kame chuckled at the two replies he got. It was just so like those two to ask him to take a rest. It was not that he was stressed either... he wondered idly if he gave them that impression.
He was about to keep his phone when it vibrated, signalling another message.

“I am not going to wait for another message to come,” Kame announced and promptly shut his phone off and tossed it into his bag.
“That was hilarious,” Riko commented.
“Thank you, I am glad that I have provided you with a source of entertainment,” Kame replied.
They lapsed into silence and Riko sighed silently, staring at the closed doors where Ryu was. Kame did not tell her not to worry for he himself was basking that very emotion. How could he not? He loved Ryu so much.
A few minutes later, a doctor walked over to them and told them the room that Ryu was in and told them that Ryu would probably have to stay for at least a day. If his temperature goes down, he could go home.
Thanking the doctor, Kame and Riko immediately rushed into the room.
“Oh Ryu,” Riko mumbled as she sat next to his bed, feeling his forehead.
It was burning.
“Riko, cheer up,” Kame said. “He’s like me; strong. He’ll recover in no time. Ne Ryu?” He muttered the last bit, directing it towards the sleeping boy.
“Are you hungry?” Kame asked, expecting a ‘no’ from Riko.
“No.”
As expected.
“Well, you’re going to have to eat. I’ll go get you some breakfast,” Kame told her, his tone making it clear that there was no room for any argument.
“Get some for yourself too!” she retorted as Kame walked out of the room, a smile gracing his lips.
Kame wandered around the hospital in search of the cafeteria, deciding to explore the place. After a few minutes, he found himself standing at the entrance of the cafeteria. Somehow he had managed to find his way there.
“Kamenashi, what are you doing here?”
Kame stopped. That voice was way too familiar. And there was only one person who called him Kamenashi in that indifferent tone... please do not let it be...
Kame slowly turned around.
... Akanishi Jin...
