PW, "Inauspicious Beginnings," Maya/Franziska, Phoenix/Miles, PG

The prompt for this one (kink meme fic, but you knew that already) was "two competent adults going on an awkward date." And somehow, in my determination to write Edgeworth and Gumshoe, I ended up with ... Franziska and Maya.

Don't ask, I don't know.

BUT! It's my first posted yuri, so that's exciting. Also, I would do Franziska in a heartbeat, but nevermind.

Enjoy! ♥

Inauspicious Beginnings

The memory of her first date is one Maya seldom talks about, though she thinks on it frequently, usually when Franziska's still half-asleep in the morning and slops hot coffee on herself, or on nights when Franziska's bathing and doesn't hear her sneak into the shower until Maya's got her hands on Franziska's sides, where the older woman is ticklish.

But on Christmas eve, sitting in the warm glow of the colorful lights strung perfectly around the Christmas tree Pearl picked out and Miles decorated, her belly full of good pot roast and her head swimming from a bit too much good egg-nog, Maya giggles and drapes her arm around Trucy, grinning up at the sight of her lover, Franziska fast asleep, leaning against her "baby brother."

"It was a disaster," she says, waving her free hand. "Totally ... awkward. You'd think two full-grown adults could manage a date, but ..."

She dissolves into a fit of giggles. Across the room, Franziska stirs against Miles' shoulder, and Miles frowns, Trucy's eyes huge when Maya grins down at her.

"Tell me about it?" she says.

Maya sighs. "Oh why not," she says.

"We'd discovered, a couple months earlier, that we both really liked detective novels. One of Franny's 'guilty pleasures,' she said. I only read 'em 'cause Nick liked them and loaned them to me when he'd finished. Got together a few times-me and Fran-to talk about them over coffee, usually whenever Nick'd disappear without a trace and didn't answer his phone, no matter how often I called him."

She gives Miles a look. Miles clears his throat and glares at the Christmas tree.

"Anyway. So you'd think we'd be okay to go on a date, right? Since we'd been out together before. Date shouldn't be so different."

Trucy nods. "Right," she says. "But it was?"

Maya giggles. "Yeah," she says. "Really different.

"We thought about just going for coffee like usual, at first, but I didn't want to do that because ... I don't know, just wanted it to be different. So we went out to dinner instead. Or tried to. Got to the restaurant, only to discover a certain prosecutor having a candlelit dinner with my boss."

Trucy's eyes are huge, perfectly round. "Papa and Miles were having a date already, weren't they," she says. "Did they see you?"

"No," says Miles, from the sofa, transferring his glare from the tree to Maya, who giggles at him. "We were otherwise occupied, having a discussion about a recent case."

Maya rolls her eyes. "They were holding hands and gazing into each other's eyes," she says, batting her eyes at Trucy for extra effect. "But still, we couldn't risk being seen, 'cause back then we didn't want Nick and Miles to know about us."

"Regardless of the fact that we'd figured out your mutual attraction, each for the other, months before," Miles says.

Franziska sighs and shifts, sliding down the sofa to curl up beside her brother, her head resting on his thigh. "Fool," she sighs.

Miles pats her on the arm, and she goes still.

Maya grins. "Well anyway," she says.

"So Franny spots them first-Nick and Miles, that is-and goes completely rigid, like she's just seen a ghost, right? I wasn't paying much attention, so I ran into her, which startled her, so she jumped and kinda elbowed me, right in the gut. Knocked the wind out of me! I mean she didn't mean to, but it still hurt, so I made a noise. Didn't mean to, but I did.

"Well, that made Fran even more nervous, 'cause the restaurant wasn't all that big and I was kinda loud, so she gets ahold of me and drags me out of the restaurant, keeping me hunched over so we wouldn't be seen. Except that just got everyone we passed by to look at us funny ... it's a miracle Nick didn't hear them talking about us and figure it out right then!"

Miles sighs. "You overestimate Wright's ability to figure things out when the clues aren't convoluted beyond the comprehensibility of a normal mind," he says. "Both of you."

Maya waves her hand dismissively at him. "Anyway. So dinner was out, and Fran was pretty embarrassed, 'cause the people at the restaurant were all staring at us. She's not very nice when she's embarrassed, so I got upset and thought about crying. First real date, you know? You kinda expect things to be good.

"We ended up walking a ways, both really wanted to get away from the restaurant. I was pretty upset, I guess, and it was starting to get dark out, so I thought it was over, the date was ruined. About ... oh, maybe four or five blocks away, we came to a playground, and Fran ..."

She smiles, tips her head to the side to rest against Trucy's. "Fran caught up to me and took me by the hand. Dragged me over to the swings with that look she gets on her face when she's really upset with a witness in court, you know? And said: 'Fool. Get on a swing and I will push you until you are having fun again.' Just like that!"

Trucy puts a hand to her mouth, aww'ing softly. "That's so sweet," she says.

"Isn't it?" says Maya. "Only lasted about ten minutes, though."

Trucy pulls away from her, lower lip sticking out in a pout. "Why?"

Maya winks at her, then looks at Miles, sidelong. "You want to tell her?"

Miles sniffs. "It was Wright's idea," he says. "I was simply following him to make sure he didn't stumble out into traffic and get hurt."

"Oh no," says Trucy, turning to Maya, wide-eyed.

"Oh yes," says Maya. "Both of them came stumbling into the playground, Nick pretty well sloshed, arm around Mister Edgeworth's waist. Franny had me swinging pretty high by then, so when I tried to jump off the swing-figured she'd want to get away again-it, uh ... didn't work out so well. My skirt got caught on the swing when I tried to jump, and-"

Trucy gasps. "Did it tear?"

Maya shakes her head. "That actually would've been better!" she says, laughing. "But no, it just got hooked so I didn't jump right, ended up face-down on the little pebbles around the swings. Bloodied up my nose, scared Franny to death." She glances at her lover, the older woman still asleep on the sofa, and smiles. "She got down on the ground next to me, hugged me while I mopped up my face. Even though Nick and Mister Edgeworth were right there, watching."

Miles' cheeks flush a bit. "As I said already, we knew before of your mutual attraction." He puts his hand on his sister's shoulder, squeezes it gently. "It was nice to see that you had come to terms with it on your own, and convenient to get it out in the open from the get-go."

"Yeah, I guess," says Maya. "Made it so we didn't have to be so sneaky on our next date, anyway. That was nice." She ruffles Trucy's hair. "So anyway. That's the story of my first date."

Trucy beams. "That's so cool," she says. "I hope my first date's romantic like that."

Maya laughs, loudly enough that Franziska stirs, frowning at the front of Miles' sweater. Miles glances down at her, then offers Trucy a small, crooked smile.

"Better that than my own first experience with Wright," he says, quietly. "But that is one tale which I will leave for your father to tell you. I think we've had enough storytelling for one evening."

Trucy's and Maya's combined squealing, at that, is enough to wake Franziska fully, her lecture on foolish fools foolishly waking her with their foolish shouting giving Miles just enough time to slip out of the room, breathing a sigh of relief as he closes the bedroom door behind himself and joins his sleeping lover in their bed.

"You'd better come up with an appropriately convincing story to tell your daughter tomorrow," he murmurs, wrapping his arms around the sleeping man. "I'll never live it down if she learns that our first date took place at a Steel Samurai convention. In the men's room."

Phoenix mumbles something about boiled eggs, nuzzling his pillow a bit before going still. Miles chuckles and closes his eyes, relaxing against the familiar warmth of the man he loves.

The story of their first date, he figures, is a worry to deal with in the morning.
