Right - I am currently taking a brain break from prepping for my final Psychotherapy module weekend (in which our Heroine presents her Final Project), so I thought I would attempt some kind of an actual update for all you glorious and wonderful people whom I have not seen in an age (though not from lack of desire!).
Study first, as I have already mentioned it.
For those who don't know, I am completing my first year (of 2-3) in a Contemporary Psychotherapy degree program. This has been a year of traveling down to London for one weekend a month of intense and highly role-play based study. (The theory being if you haven't experienced it yourself, how can you do it with someone else?) I've written two essays, and done this modeling project, as well as lots of active work during the weekends. I have also attended two additional 3-day weekends on Psychopathology in Theraputic Practice (how to identify schitzophrenia when it walks in your door) and Human Development (Nature? Nurture? Is Adolescence really a development period? How are gender roles viewed/transforming? And how does neuroscience fit into all this?). And this is Only The Beginning.
I still have two 5-day modules to go: one on Hypnotherapy and one on Addictions. I also have a 3-day module on Ethical Practice. Simultaneously, I will be starting my year long Clinical Practice module, where I actually start to work with clients. This requires supervision by a qualified professional, and I have to write 3 essays as well as attend an additional 3 day workshop for this module. Wheee!
It's a lot to do, but all really exciting stuff. I am also in touch with the local ADHD clinic here in Cambridge, and am in the process of putting together a pilot study on Contemporary Psychotherapy and its effectiveness with adults with ADHD. This will give me my clinic hours, but will also contribute to the body of research out there on psychotherapy and ADHD, of which there is very little. AND I've just heard back from the specialist psychologist who is involved with the program that he will discuss supervision with me! *squeee* This is really important, as it's particularly good to get a supervisor who has experience with your client group, and being able to find someone who has experience working with adult patients with ADHD is really rare.
How I am going to do all this and work full time? *shrug* No idea. But I'm doing it. We'll just take it as it comes.
So that's the school update. Wish me luck - I hope it goes well! Stay tuned....
