This is one of those "six degrees of separation" stories.
I'm a bit sensitive to poorly constructed language. I'm no linguo-prude (I made that word up), but the state of the language lately has me more responsive than usual. So today when I heard a proper, English speaker - from England - on the BBC use "favoritize" in an otherwise sensible sentence, first I said "D'oh!" then made a mental note to check out the legitimacy of that word.
When I got on-line I searched for uses of "favoritize". One of the first hits that came up was from a Flickr user who had a set of his pictures he'd labeled "Favoritized". One particular image caught my attention. It's of the Smögen Marina in Sweden. (It took me fifteen minutes to figure out how to get that umlaut over the 'o' in Smögen!) I lingered a while and found all kinds of interesting photographs from all over the world. I went so far as to sign up with Flickr just so I could "favoritize" pictures myself, and there's a wealth of 'em I'm here to tell you.
I only stayed for an hour or so but during that time I found a number of groups for images of Scotland and joined a couple of those. Then I started seeing groups of images whose themes had to do with abandoned places and things. There are pictures of ghost towns, remote abandoned buildings, farm equipment, bicycles, houses, dark places, and the list goes on. There was a Flickr member who had one whole set of nothing but images of the abandoned Denbigh hospital in Wales, known locally as the Denbigh Asylum as it specialized in psychiatric treatment. The construction started in the 1840s from what I can tell. The images were eerie, haunting and any other cliche you care to use.
It's apparent that a lot of the images have been manipulated - some annoyingly so as it dissipated the energy of the image - and I wonder what they would look like raw.
Leaving that aside, I found a lot of good pictures and I think I'm gonna go back, maybe even upload a few of my own.
I've only "favoritized" a dozen or so pictures so far. Since I can't post pictures here I'll just put the link up in case you're interested. You can visit the various groups and users from there. You don't have to sign up with Flickr.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/36765599@N05/favorites/ I still decry this artificial, casual - indeed lazy - method of constructing words. (This started for me when I heard someone say "conversating" in place of "conversing". My life hasn't been the same since.) But people will be people and if they can't find the proper word they'll just invent one, or should I say, "inventorate"?
