I'm writing this Sunday morning, having just seen the Dar Williams concert last night. Well worth six dollars; heck, I'd have paid the full twelve dollar price willingly for something so beautiful! The
opening act was a recent Oberlin grad who apparently was the babysitter for Mrs. William's kids at one time! (Dar even wrote a song about her based on that!) They both did such very lovely songs--The Parting Glass and The Next Best Western (a sort of trucker's hymn) were the highlight's of the opening act. Dar opened her part up with a song called Calling the Moon, I recognised I Had No Right and End of the Summer, and she finished with The Christians and the Pagans and this really lovely song called When I Was a Boy. And there was also 'The One Who Knows', which she prefaced by reminding us that no matter who we are, there's someone back home who's proud of us. I'm a little disappointed that she didn't do Teenagers, but the rest more than made up for it!
Classes are going great. Professor Gorfain is an incredibly sweet woman, and she knows lots of stuff, though she tends to think like a hummingbird sometimes, flitting from idea to idea and easily getting
off track. Professor Moser, the Theatre 101 teacher, is really laid-back, a bit like Steve, and sounds like he really knows what he's talking about. And my Chem Teacher, Professor Thompson is pretty cool. The class looks like it's gonna be mostly review of what I did in high school, so I don't think I'll have any problem handling the coursework.
Money's holding out well. Haven't gotten my debit card yet, so I haven't had too much time to spend it. I am gonna have to buy a lab book for Chemistry, and if I get into Capoeira officially, I'll have to purchase a couple class shirts and another book. On the other hand, Mestre Emaka has to cut ten people from the class, and I'm one of the slowest learners at the moment. If I do get in, I'll give it my all,
of course. But if I don't, I've got a few ExCos lined up on Storytelling, Kurt Vonnegut, and Calvin and Hobbes. (The last day of that ExCo, we get to play Calvinball!) I've also signed up for
Thursday Bowling League, which should get me some exercise even if Capoeira falls through. At any rate, I'll know Monday morning.
I've managed to get into the one acts showcase, in two plays--one as an extra, the other as one of the lead roles. Of course, there's only two characters in that second play. It's called the Ten Minute Joke; I
think I'm Feiffer, the one trying to tell the joke. It's a little Abbot and Costello-esque, though it turns darkly philosophical at the end. I'm still waiting for news on the Measure for Measure callbacks.
A bit later today, I'm going to one of the first gaming meetings on campus, with one of the LARP groups. Next weekend is the first official meeting of OGRE. Shouldn't have much trouble finding a group to play with!
