Crazy experience of the night

Oct 05, 2008 12:30

Last night, my cousin forwarded me the 'is Obama the antichrist' email(http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/antichrist.asp), but with additional racism at the beginning. Normally, this would be an instant delete, but my cousin sent it to me and like 80 of my other relatives, so I felt that the bigotry could not stand and had to be corrected.

Let us take a look at the key claim:
"According to the Book of Revelations the anti-christ is: The anti-christ will be a man, in his 40s, of MUSLIM descent, who will deceive the nations with persuassive language, and have a MASSIVE Christ-like appeal.... the prophecy says that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world peace, and when he is in power, will destory everything. Is it OBAMA??"

I'm not a biblical scholar, but I do have a copy of the bible, and unlike the author of this, I actually read the book of Revelation(last night).

The problems
First, the book of Revelation never uses the word anti-christ. The closest is 'The Beast'.
Second, the words Muslim and Islam are never used in the book of Revelation. Why? Because Islam wasn't invented for another 400 years. Oops.
Third, the beast is described as a 7 headed beast with 10 crowns on his 10 horns, and the body of a leopard, bear, and a lion.
Fourth, it is the book of Revelation, not Revelations.

So yes, if you think Obama is a 7 headed beast, I strongly urge you to vote for McCain. But really, you probably have larger concerns at that point.

Realistically, this email was pure bigotry disguised as religious fervor. For all of those people thinking "I'd like to be a bigot, but I can't figure out how to phrase it in a politically correct manner", this is their get out of jail free card. Personally, I'd stick with the lack of experience excuse if you want to be racist and not act like it.

I can post the entire email, but it is long and will probably make most of you very angry.
