Palin is the Chewbacca Defense

Oct 03, 2008 22:58

After realizing he is a virtual clone of George W. on most issues, and realizing that Dubbya's approval ratings are at 22%, McCain has thrown up the Chewbacca Defense in the form of Sarah Palin.

She does not make sense. Any self-respecting conservative should be apalled at her lack of respect for the constitution during the debate. For that matter, a liberal should be appalled as well. If we have no semblance of respect for the constitution, where are we? Who are we? Why not disregard the first amendment as well? We'll just start banning literature which offends us like Turkey does? Apparently she's ok with torture, since she thinks the worst thing Cheney did was "I guess that would have been the duck hunting accident--where you know, that was an accident."

Admittedly, I feel more betrayed than a normal person because I defended McCain for quite a while. I felt he embodied a distinct departure from the current form of Republicanism, and was a worthy alternate opinion, even when I didn't intend to vote for him. But I feel he both betrays the conservative ideals as well as his pledge to put the country in front of the election, both in his agreement with Bush and with his selection of Palin. He knows the mistakes of Bush and knows Palin is an 'agent of intolerance', but refuses to acknowledge them or depart from that course.
