Day 19. A song from your favorite album - Autechre: Eggshell (from ("Incunabula")
I cheated a wee bit, yet again. I have no definitive number one favourite album. Genesis' Selling England By the Pound would have been an easy and legitimate pick, as would Dubnobasswithmyheadman by Underworld. But Genesis will come up again later in this meme, and both 50poundnote and ferricide have already featured Underworld.
So there were contenders for this post, but Incunabula is somewhat special in that it is the only ambient electronica album on the list.
Ambient albums almost always fall short for me. It is not like I do not appreciate the genre (I do), and there certainly are other collections worth mentioning - Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works series, Cylob's Bounds Green, Global Communication's 76:14, Solar Quest's Orgship and of course Ambient 1 by Brian Eno. But while all of them contain some great individual tracks, they somehow fail as albums: Sooner or later boredom inevitably sets in.
Incunabula, however, I can listen to all the way through, without tiring of it. Eggshell is my absolute favourite and in many ways representative of the whole album: brilliant melody, interesting yet completely unintrusive beats. A nice trip from the time before Autechre hit the "distort and randomize" button.
