So lately I've been getting into the Sera Myu, the Sailor Moon stage musicals that were performed in Japan from 1992 to 2005. And I'm not into them in any sort of ironic sense, I'm into them because I will always love Sailor Moon and, quite frankly, the musicals are just plain awesome. Not only is the music absolutely brilliant, but the costume and set design is fantastic (looking pretty much just like what you imagine for a Sailor Moon musical), the choreography great and the stories themselves actually really good, certainly a better interpretation of the manga than either the anime or the live-action series.

Here is the cast of the 1996 musical, Yume Senshi - Ai - Eien ni... Saturn Fukkatsu Hen! performing "La Soldier", which basically the "Moonlight Densetsu" of the Sera Myu. Playing Sailor Moon is Anza Oyama, the first person to play Usagi on the stage and my personal favorite. Though she probably wasn't the best actress, she was easily the best vocalist of all the various Moons, with a strong voice and a great range. "La Soldier" is an amazing song, truly brilliant, easily as good if not better than "Moonlight Densetsu".

The video quality is a bit crap but that the only one I could find on YouTube with Anza in her Sailor fuku. Here's another version of La Soldier, of slightly better quality, with the original cast sans wigs and in their characters' school uniforms:

Behind the cut is some more YouTubage of a few songs, including another video of La Soldier with Fumina Hara playing Usagi (that's of a much higher quality but as I stated, I like Anza more) and a couple of others.

I've realized that Sailor Moon is going to be one of those things that I always love. It's now right there with X-Men, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Futurama and the Simpsons, in very good company indeed.
