I got ahold of Bill, my buddy from the Grand, earlier today. He rode out the storm in Fort Bayou and they're doing relatively well. He says power is back up through parts of the Fort Bayou neighborhood, and that he should get service by later today, or tomorrow at the latest. He was getting some food and supplies from stores in Gautier. The most he needs are ice and gas. My buddy Tootie Mayfield lives right next door to him, and he's also ok. So at this point, it's not so much a matter of if I go back, but when, and with what. The main question right now are what supplies to bring. I'd figure at least 20 gallons of water and gasoline (seperately, natch), food (refridgerated items should be ok), medical supplies (rubbing alcohol, triple antibiotic, etc.), SPF 45 sunblock and work gloves. If anyone else thinks of something extra, feel free to add.
Also, most importantly, communications are still spotty at best, especially with cell phones. Bill said I was the first person he's gotten in touch since Sunday. My cousin Aaron works with Motorola, and his first suggestion was to change from the Coast area code (228) to upstate service (662), since so many of the towers downstate are down. The signal will relay through the upstate towers first, so that would leave a better chance of getting service. After this, I'm bouncing to Jackson St. to get the supplies and deal with Cell South. Hopefully there are gas cans left; Wal-Mart was all out yesterday. I'll take the phone book with me, should that be the case.
Glad to hear from everyone, and very glad to hear that no one's had any fatalities so far. Keeping my fingers crossed.
