Clothes cascade out as Sam up-ends the duffle over the washing machine. He fishes around the bottom of the bag and pulls out a worn blue shirt. It’s frayed around the cuffs, one button dangles by a thread and there is a dark stain on the front that could be ketchup or blood. It reeks of sweat and gunpowder and ash and, under all that, of Dean.

Sam draws the curved edge of the small Bowie knife quickly and firmly across his bicep.

As the knife cuts through his skin, the pain cuts through the morass of feelings inside him. This hurt is clean and sharp and then it stops.

Just a little drabble inspired by this weeks episode

His mother’s hair soft on his cheek. Freshly mown grass tickling his nose. Sammy smiling with his arm around Jess.

The memories were like shiny silver dollars. Dean hoarded them away and brought them out on dark rainy days, turning them over in his mind, squinting to pick out the little details.
