hai thar Star Trek 2.0. Aren't you shiny?
Way to reboot a franchise JJ Abrams!! Make a movie thats a good kickass space action flick, set up the 'verse for those new to it, and for the rest of us who are fans of one form or another of Trek over forty years elegantly tie it into canon, but not tie to canon. For long time fans they are many sweet spots, like Captain Pike's appearance, the Kobayashi Maru test, Nurse Chapell, Red Shirts and even aural references in the aoundtrack that will make you sigh with happiness. And lets not even get started on the squee of Leonard Nimoyness!
I'm as old as Star Trek, and have watched all it's incarnations with varying degrees of fanishness. I have a big soft spot for TOS because it was my first, and because it really was original on TV in the sixties. One thing i loved was that the main characters were all difficult people, as were their relationships. And at the heart it was about Kirk and Spock with Bones as the fag hag BFF Kirk went to for advice everytime he and Spock had a spat. Karl Urban rocked my socks as Bones. He and Pine had really great stuff going on.
They really got the character chemistry right here and I can't wait to see this develop in the next movie - bc as every fan knows we need some good angsty h/c to really bring out the slash. I didn't mind the Spock/Uhura although i think it could bring plot difficulties later tying both to a r'ship from the beginning. I hope Uhura's role is beefed up, a reboot is a chance to change somethings, and i was sort of hoping one of the supporting roles (like Sulu or Chekov) mightve been made female. But that not really a complaint.
Most of all i loved that they kept the essence of Kirk as he originally was - not just cocky but arrogant, and slightly vain.
Roll on ST:2!!
