Mirrors - a meta on Sin City

Credit here to lostt1 and her meta on this episode, where she discussed the use of mirrors in this episode. Also - credit to Supernatural for being so fucking fantastic, that themes and characterizations present from the Pilot continue to underpin the show and allow wankers like me to write unnecessarily long metas about it.

But now that it his love for Dean that is driving him, what will hold him back?

I feel like this meta should end with a "Dun dun dun!" Interesting thoughs, I'll be keen to see where this one goes.

It's defintiely going to be a "dun, dun dun" type of season I think!

Obviously I agree with what you said here. :) Especially when showing Sam and Dean as mirrors for each other. They seem so different on the surface, as do most siblings, but they actually mirror each other perfectly. They may want different things, act differently, etc. but in the end, it all boils down to "brother before others."

Yes! really the point is that both of them need, want, the other, and that they both grow and change by exposure to his brother. In all the good ways, but also there is that dangerous edge to their need/lvoe for each other.

Thanks! Mirroring is a really strong device used throughout this show - just think of how many seasons they mirror to make a point - esp from the Pilot - the bridge slam, the fleeing from the house, the final scene. And of course at the centre are Sam and reflected in each other.

I love my show...I love the way they used actual mirrors in this episode to show the distortions of the humans around the boys and even in the hotel room the distorted mirror ceiling...above as it is below ( ... )

I agree with you about John's influence on Dean's faith. I think in my meta after HotH, i comented that in some way Dean's "faith" was shifted on to what i called The Church of John Winchester - it was his father that he placed his faith in, father than God.

I also agree about Ruby's priority being Sam, and Dean is mainly just a means to this. I am interested that we have yet to see Dean and Ruby together - is tehre something he will guess about her that she is avoiding?

I ran away and read your meta on HOTH and oh yum...I agree. Absolutely, Dean replaced God with John. But did John believe in God?

I don't think so and even tho' Mary told Dean that Angel's watched over them, it doesn't necessarily confirm Mary's own belief in God. Or is that a sacrilegious thought :-) I don't remember any specific discussion of Mary's beliefs other than Dean's comment about Angels and her faith, and some people treat Angels the same way we treat fairies ( ... )

Hell as being "an absence of the loved one". I really like this - how appropos for Sam and Dean, particularly. I suspect that for Dean Hell will be a pit of despair if only bc it means he is without Sam.

I am fascinated to see what we find out about Mary and Azazel, and what this says about her faith. I love that both Mary and John continue to be active presences in the show.

and yes, a debate of faith between Pastor Jim and John would be great. And I wonder what Bobby believes...
