Credit here to
lostt1 and her
meta on this episode, where she discussed the use of mirrors in this episode. Also - credit to Supernatural for being so fucking fantastic, that themes and characterizations present from the Pilot continue to underpin the show and allow wankers like me to write unnecessarily long metas about it.

I don't think so and even tho' Mary told Dean that Angel's watched over them, it doesn't necessarily confirm Mary's own belief in God. Or is that a sacrilegious thought :-) I don't remember any specific discussion of Mary's beliefs other than Dean's comment about Angels and her faith, and some people treat Angels the same way we treat fairies.
There has been no overt display of her faith. She hasn't worn a cross in any of the ep's (did she?) but she knew the YED or I guess we can call him Azazael now. She may have had more of any understanding of the fight between good and evil than has been revealed as yet, but did that include faith.
I only raise Mary's faith to throw light on Dean and his questing soul. He'd like to believe, but can't commit (God could almost be a woman :-O). He's seen too much and done too much to think that any place of peace and love exists even tho' he is happy to believe in Casey's "pit of despair". Of which he has hard evidence. (As an aside, I have a vague memory of having read a description of Hell as being "an absence of the loved one". Can anyone confirm that? )
As for Ruby meeting Dean…I think she knows Dean will salt her arse if he sees her. He wouldn’t hesitate to exorcise her straight back to hell. He won’t risk Sam falling prey to the Crossroad Demon’s clause as much as he is afraid of dying and going to Hell and he is terrified that dealing with Ruby will cause further damage to Sam and his soul.
...I would give anything to hear a debate of faith between Pastor Jim and John...

I am fascinated to see what we find out about Mary and Azazel, and what this says about her faith. I love that both Mary and John continue to be active presences in the show.
and yes, a debate of faith between Pastor Jim and John would be great. And I wonder what Bobby believes...
