Commentary on the commentary

So i think all the extras on the DVDs are fantastic, and I wish there were commentaries on every episode. The work - both creative and logistic - that goes into every episode is incredible, and I want to send all the crew cookies. I love how Cyrus and Kim are like John and Bobby to Jared and Jensen's Sam and Dean.   I want to smish Kripke, have ( Read more... )

The Roadhouse never worked for me, to be honest. One of my favourite aspects of the show is the sense that the boys are isolated from the world at large - without any kind of support system beyond each other. I liked them as freaks without peers. Very early on in the season, in fact, I gleefully predicted that the Roadhouse would be blown up in the final episode of the season, because seriously. A building full of hunters? If I were a demon it'd be my first target.

That, and I really wasn't a fan of Ash. I adore Ellen and I hope she comes back, and Alona Tal is gorgeous and sweet and I really liked what they were doing with Jo - she started out as this annoying little twinkette, but in BUaBS she'd grown up a lot and I really enjoyed her. I hope she comes back as well. But ASH. I really resented that character, and I have no idea why. *g*

*nods* I think, at least subconsciously, the writers also believe this, which is why they didn't to it to use for the boys to meet people - which then meant it had no purpose. Ellen and Jo could have still existed as they were without the Roadhouse.

Part of my deep love for the commentaries tho, is the honesty with which the process of creating is talked about. I felt like giving Kripke a big hug when he talked abotu Simon Said, bc I think that ep was a lot better than he feels, although I could see where he was coming from. And the fact that he is so self critcial and reflective means the show will only get MORE AWESOME.

Oh YES. They really think about the characters and how best to serve them, and the plot arcs and the individual episodes. They reflect on what's been done and if something didn't work they own it and build from there. LOVE.

More than anything, I would love to be able to sit in on the process of writing an episode.

I like the idea of the Roadhouse more than the reality of it. I felt there was so much that could have been achieved there that wasn't.

Nods. The fact that they boys never interacted with the other hunters meant it might as well have been a normal bar.

Now that I think about it, this is why Roadhouse fics rarely work for me - they insert far more relating than I ever saw, or could imagine Winchesters actually doing.

Ooh, very interesting. I never really thought of it as one of those stereotypical gathering places they have on TV, but it makes a lot of sense. I was personally pretty sad to see it go.

If they can keep Ellen and Jo around I'll be happy.

When it was first introduced, I was really thrilled (especially by Ellen), but not much was ever done there. I'm sad for its lost potential.

The Roadhouse is really the only element on the show that never worked for me. The Roadhouse is, at its nature, a stationary element, and given the type of facility it is, it's a "home base". When you try to put something like that on a show that is, by nature, not stationary (or at least without any stationary elements), you run into problems.

I mean, the boys constantly travel, right? City to city, all over the U.S. Why is it logical for them to pop into Harvelle's any time they need a bit of info they could just as easily obtain over the phone? A better idea would have been to establish a home for Ellen & Jo, have Ash living in the basement, and have the boys drop in once, maybe twice, and use the phone more often. And maybe meet the boys on occasion, just like Bobby meets them. But establishing a place that makes it necessary for the boys to frequent didn't work. Not that it couldn't work, if, say, it was 100% necessary for the boys to frequently visit a place. But in the end, the Roadhouse was just a place where people sat ( ... )

I agree. Teh Roadhouse needed to ahve a function, and in this show it didn't. Like police shows, or even medical shows where the workplace (or crime scene) is where everything happens, for the boys the road is where it all happens. Like meeting Gordon. They didn't need the Roadhouse to meet him.

and the TWOP thing is cool whenever.
