I had another awesome night yesterday evening. First, I came home from Diff-EQ and James Finta was hanging out at the house. So good to see him again! He just came by to say hi to other-Karen and was hoping Rascal (other Karen's dog) would be around. Unfortunately other Karen had left Rascal at home for the day, but he hung around for a couple of hours, which was great.
While James was still here, Katie came over rather disheartened by some things that her voice teacher had told her. Katie, James, other Karen, and myself ended up having this great conversation about listening to where God is leading you. It played off this Sunday's first reading so well (we had just gone over the readings at the noon o'clock Gospel reflection earlier that day). This is the first reading:
Jer 17:5-8
Thus says the LORD:
Cursed is the one who trusts in human beings,
who seeks his strength in flesh,
whose heart turns away from the LORD.
He is like a barren bush in the desert
that enjoys no change of season,
but stands in a lava waste,
a salt and empty earth.
Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD,
whose hope is the LORD.
He is like a tree planted beside the waters
that stretches out its roots to the stream:
it fears not the heat when it comes;
its leaves stay green;
in the year of drought it shows no distress,
but still bears fruit.
How perfect of advice is that for someone who just got craptacular, disheartening advice from their advisor? We didn't discount the idea that her voice teacher may be right, but we also talked about how it didn't matter so much what her voice teacher thought she should do, it was more important where God was leading her.
James wandered off eventually to a Chi-Alpha event and other Karen went home with Jose, which left me and Katie for rosary. We ended up waiting 'til a little after 5:20 and then postponing rosary until after dinner. We went to Mi Puertos and had a really great time. I haven't ever spent much one-on-one time with Katie, but she's such an awesome person. Then we went across the street to Annie Kay's (I was almost out of coffee!) and also picked up a pack of Ruckus cards. Oh-em-gee, that is a fun game. It's so silly and Katie and I did get a little bit mean during it, but not mean in any sort of serious way. After that, we prayed the rosary together. Praying the rosary with Katie is really cool. I love how she says her "Hail Mary's"...you can tell that she's not just mindlessly repeating them. With each "Hail Mary" she seems to be speaking to Mary. Following the rosary, we went to see Stranger Than Fiction, which was playing as the on-campus movie. It was a pretty good film, especially interesting to me with all of the meta-fiction I've been reading in lit class. I'd recommend it.
So, that was my night. Lots of fun. Lots of giggling. Lots of God. I'm such a geek.
