Critical. Research. Failure.

Samantha Swift: Mystery From Atlantis has it.

It's set in Alaska. (Yes, I know, it says 'Atlantis' in the title. I'm only about twenty minutes in, so.)

So far, the "Native" "Totems" have involved a dolphin, a snow monkey, a bat, a snake (!!!), and a puma.

The puma, also known as a mountain lion, does occur in Alaska. Here's a map of its range. Notice the location: that is what we here call the panhandle, or southeast, or Sealaska, depending.

SS:MfA takes place somewhere out around Selawik (according to the opening cutscene, which is set in "Selawik region". No, I don't know what that's supposed to mean, either.). Selawik is over near the Seward Peninsula, which is the knob in the middle of the west coast of the state. Here, to be precise. (For those of you who are curious, Selawik is either in NANA or Bering Straits. I'll update this when I figure it out. EDIT: Selawik is in NANA.)

The snake thing is particularly egregious because Alaska doesn't HAVE snakes. (We don't have monkeys, either; we do have porpoises and little brown bats. Never seen them on totem poles, though.)

They appear to have taken random art from various groups and smooshed them together. I know I'm a little odd, but art from southeast (masks in particular) looks very different than art from further north.

About the only thing that hasn't made me want to hunt down the writers and slap them with a brick is the fact that they DID manage to get the locals correct -- Swift mentions that the people are Inupiat, which would be correct. (Also, she refers to elders, which is also correct.)

i hate you, alaska, omgwtf, did not do the research, games, writing, alaska - not on mars!, the things i know
