Title: We Know By Now To Say Enough (4/?)
Rating: T/PG-13
Disclaimer: The title/lyrics used are from the song “The Secret’s In The Telling” by Dashboard Confessional.
Summary: Missing moments between Puck and Quinn during season two.

Our act of defiance,
We keep this secret in our blood,
No paper or letters...
Nobody is going to believe this. That’s Puck’s first coherent thought when he realizes that his car is now halfway into the convenient store on Elm Street. Would people honestly consider that maybe he swerved to miss hitting a cat and he lost control of the car? Definitely not.

His hands shaking like mad, he tries to back out of the store. He’s not sure what he should do next.

But then he realizes that the fucking ATM is somehow on the hood of his car and this is so not good when he hears police sirens in the distance.

Quinn is going to so pissed, he laments to himself as he backs his car completely out of the store.

When the cops cuff him, he’s about to explain what happened, but Officer Schulman is on duty and is putting words in his mouth, claiming he drove into the store and tried to make off with the ATM machine. He’s about the deny it all, he really is, but then he remembers that he’s Puck, the self-proclaimed bad ass who can get kids to transfer with just one glare. There’s no way in hell they’d believe that this was all just an unfortunate accident.

So he just smirks, an action so familiar and automatic, and drawls, “Yeah, pretty much.”

Quinn Fabray is certainly not a curser, but what the fuck, Puckerman?

She thought it was weird that he didn’t respond to her text last night, asking about the Trey Songz CD she borrowed from him, wondering if he wouldn’t mind her keeping it for another day until she could burn it. But hearing what he did from Mr. Schue was just so infuriating.

Before Cheerio’s practice, she goes into her car and calls him. It goes directly to voicemail: “Drop one.”

Quinn rolls her eyes and waits for the beep. “Noah Puckerman, I don’t know who you think you are, but you’re the dumbest person on the face of the earth!” she yells, her voice cracking because now she feels really alone. “You’re such a jerk,” she adds in a much quieter voice, “And I hope you realize how stupid you are.” She hangs up and closes her eyes, trying to do deep, easy breaths like she learned in those pregnancy books.

It’s moments like these when she’s so glad Beth isn’t here to experience this.

When she meets Sam after classes, his forearm flexing as he grips the neck of his guitar, she feels herself slipping. Maybe she has a thing for guys who play instruments or maybe she just has a thing for guys who can be stupid and observant at the same time (seriously? How can you mix Venus and Mars?).

All she knows is that when he’s leaning in to kiss her, it throws her back to the first time Puck ever kissed her - it was like magnetism and she was unable to resist. But she will this time because she’s familiar with this road and she knows how it ends (she’s still there).

As she drives home, she can’t help but wonder why Finn never bothered teaching her how to play the drums or why Puck didn’t think to teach her how to play the guitar.

Perhaps those were just too personal for them to share. Or maybe they’re just clueless boys and Sam could maybe be better than them.

But no. As she told Sam, this was her year; she’s going to be independent and single and her heart will be protected.

As she lies in her bed at night, she composes letters to Puck that will never be written, spoken, or given. She mentally worries that Sam is worming his way into her heart and she can’t allow that. She tells Puck that she fucking hates him because she felt fat today and it’s because the stretch marks on her stomach were really noticeable this morning.

And after a few minutes, she forces herself to stop thinking about that stupid loser and go to sleep because it’s all pointless.

Very much like their relationship or whatever the hell it is. Was.

No judgment.

The most beautiful words that have come out of his mouth and it totally makes up for all the Na’avi nonsense he spews half the time.

She kind of needs that in her life, especially since she feels like she’s dissected every second she’s in that school. Even though she promised herself she wouldn’t go down this road again, she thinks that this can be better, even good for her.

So she lets this be a date. She lets him kiss her goodnight and she lets herself move on and forget about Noah Puckerman, at least for a little while.
