This long weekend (Italy has Nov. 1st off) I went with a friend from school to Perugia and Firenze (Florence). Perugia was gorgeous - the weather was perfect, the city was lovely in nature and size, I had the best hot chocolate ever, AND the people were so nice.
Firenze. The weather SUCKED. It poured like no other for two days and of course everyone thought, "Hey, let's go to a museum!" We ended up not going to the Uffizi on Sunday because the waiting time was SIX HOURS. Seriously? Firenze, get your shit together. If the Vatican can have a waiting time of less than thirty minutes, even when the line is almost a kilometer long, then you guys can certainly come up with a more efficient manner of running things.
So we went to the Galleria dell'Academia and waited in line outside in the pouring rain for over an hour (lesser of two evils) to see the David (it was so worth it - such an amazing statue). While I really liked Firenze...the whole crappy weather made the trip kind of...annoying. I have to go back another time.
But because of being outside in the pouring rain and getting half-soaked...my cold has come back with a vengeance. Wahhhh.
Anywho, on to better topics. This weekend I also finished (I really read over half the book on the train to Perugia) A Clockwork Orange. Holy. Crackers. What a book. I haven't seen the movie yet, but if it's anything like the book...it's going to be fucked up. But it was somehow so great, I can't explain it. I can definitely see why it has a cult following. Next year for Halloween I'm SO going to be Alex! (I've seen posters for the movie, of course, and his outfit is awesome). Now I really want to write a oneshot or something with Rory and Jess discussing this book - it must be one of Jess' favorites and not just because it's "daring" or anything like that.
Speaking of books, here's a book meme!
1) What author do you own the most books by?
Alexandre Dumas.
2) What book do you own the most copies of? Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
3) Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions? Surprisingly, no. But looking back, yes.
4) What fictional character are you secretly in love with? Too many. It's kind of a problem.
5) What book have you read the most times in your life? Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
6) What was your favorite book when you were ten years old?
The Phantom Tollbooth.
7) What is the worst book you’ve read in the past year? The Sun Also Rises - what exactly happened in that book?
8) What is the best book you’ve read in the past year? Pride and Prejudice and Zombies/Pillars of the Earth/A Clockwork Orange - I can’t choose!
9) If you could force everyone you know to read one book, what would it be? The Catcher in the Rye. But school systems all over the US are already trying to do that.
10) Who deserves to win the next Nobel Prize for Literature? No effing clue.
11) What book would you most like to see made into a movie?
Scarlet. It’s a random book that twists the Robin Hood legend, but it’s fucking awesome. Will Scarlet is just a BAMF in general.
12) What book would you least like to see made into a movie? The Catcher in the Rye. Hollywood would ruin it. If anything, they could’ve done it when John Cusack was younger - he would’ve been a great Holden, in my humble opinion.
13) Describe your weirdest dream involving a writer, book, or literary character. I dreamed I went to Hogwarts with everybody. I didn’t want to wake up.
14) What is the most lowbrow book you’ve read as an adult?
Beach Blondes. Trashy beach read.
15) What is the most difficult book you’ve ever read? Heart of Darkness. Well worth it, though.
16) What is the most obscure Shakespeare play you’ve seen? To be honest, the only Shakespeare plays I've seen on the stage are Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
17) Do you prefer the French or the Russians? French.
18) Roth or Updike? Haven't gotten to reading them.
19) David Sedaris or Dave Eggers? Haven’t gotten to reading them either.
20) Shakespeare, Milton, or Chaucer? Shakespeare. But Milton and Chaucer can be quite good.
21) Austen or Eliot? Haven’t read Eliot yet, so Austen (for now?).
22) What is the biggest or most embarrassing gap in your reading? Most Russian novels. And most of the Beats.
23) What is your favorite novel? Way too hard.
24) Play? Twelfth Night.
25) Poem? I'm not too big into poetry, but this extremely hot senior at my college last year had a tattoo of the first stanza of "The Tyger" on his bicep.
26) Essay? The Doors of Perception.
27) Short story? Anything from Nine Stories.
28) Work of nonfiction? Not a fan, but I did enjoy Aldous Huxley's works.
29) Who is your favorite writer? J.D. Salinger.
30) Who is the most overrated writer alive today? Stephenie Meyer - SHE CAN’T WRITE.
31) What is your desert island book? The Count of Monte Cristo.
32) And… what are you reading right now? Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
If you guys have any book recommendations, let me know!!
Ciao tutti!
