dog walks, politics, and bread baking

ruby and i just got back from a walk! not quite a 45-minute walk, but i would say a good 30-40ish minute one. she's so ill-behaved on the leash for the first 20-25 minutes, and i know that's mostly my fault. a) she'd have better manners if she was walked more often, and b) she probably wouldn't be so gosh-darned excited about it if we went every day. i mean hey, maybe she would, but it seems like whenever i *do* take her out, she acts as if it is both the first and last walk she'll ever have, so she'd better make the most of it.

i am pretty excited that it's 1 day till the election. i spent most of the morning/early afternoon researching propositions to figure out how i'll be voting, and i've come to decisions on all but 2 of the statewide measures. i'm a little foggier on the l.a.-only stuff, not because it's any more complicated than the rest, but because i have somehow misplaced my sample ballot (and eddie's, oops! i'm sure they've been stashed in the same place since they must have come in the mail the same day) so i'm not exactly sure which ones even apply to me. i got the municipal voter information pamphlet in the mail (it sure does look a lot like a sample ballot... but it's not) but it only has measures A and B in it, and i'm pretty sure those aren't the only two. plus there are judges and representatives and blah blah blah. eddie downloaded a pdf of the sample ballot, but how does that work? doesn't everybody have different districts or some crap? so confusing...

shortly, i am off to the library to pick up a copy of "the bread lover's bread machine cookbook" (at least i think that's the title) which has the information on biga starters that i am craving. i think. if i love the book, i'll add it to my wish list. and if not... hey, it was free! i love the library. i had forgotten all about it but then i was reading some money-saving tips and the first one was STOP BUYING BOOKS. THAT IS WHAT THE LIBRARY IS FOR. now, i am a strong proponent of buying books when they are books that you will use over and over again for years, but there is a certain beauty in bringing a book home to audition for its place in your collection. if this book has exactly one recipe that i need/like/will use, I HAVE RECIPE CARDS FOR THAT. and if it is a font of useful information to keep me up to my ears in delicious bread for years to come, then of course i must have it. i guess the main trick will be to not get anything on it while it is checked out from the library... something i am not great about when it comes to cookbooks. i am sure i can work something out with some ziplock bags or cellophane or something.

ok, off to the library! what fun!
