Me-Made Back to School Wardrobe

With 3 weeks to go until I go back to school, I'm trying to get my back to school wardrobe together. It occured to me the other day while helping my little sis get her stuff ready to school that my personal style has really evolved, and has both affected and been affected by the way that I view myself as a consumer (basically, as someone who now is aware of and cares where their clothes come from and how the gratification of a cheap item may not be good for the unfortunate person who had to make it).

I've decided this year that instead of buying cheap stuff that I minimally like, I would instead go for quality items (even though they are more expensive) that I can either make or buy locally, and that will last (ie things made from all natural fibers, leather shoes, etc.) I would also like to make a lot more of my own clothes, since they are so custonmizable - I can choose the fabric, color, cut, and design of an item that I make myself. I'd like to get to an eventual point where a little over half of my wardrobe is made by me, but for now I've decided that making a few items for my back to school wardrobe is a good way to do this. At this point, I'm still in the planning stage of sewing a new wardrobe, and I am trying to lose my last pesky 5 pounds before I start sewing any more clothes! But, here is what I'd like to get accomplished in the next 3 weeks:

  • 2 Tunics (have fabric, almost completed the yellow one tho the shoulders need to be re-done)
  • 2 Ruffly blouses (have pattern and fabrics)
  • Black wool jersey sweater (have pattern and fabric)
  • Trench coat (have pattern, need fabric)

Of course, there are items that I need for school (and rainy WA weather) that I cannot make myself (like rainboots). Another motivation in doing this is to use up a lot of the fabrics (as well as notions and patterns) that I already have in my stash. I was a bit alarmed in cleaning out my closet this weekend to find much more fabric than I thought I had, and many pieces that I forgot I had. But, I guess that's a good problem to have at the age of 19 . . .
Oh, and for those interested, the apartment search the other day went good. We found some cute places, many of which were right by cute little antique shops. All that's left now is to see the inside of the places and then go from there.

Also, I am very excited for Project Runway tonight. :)
