And Everything: Ianto's story part eight

Jul 18, 2008 20:00

Alrighty... here's part eight, hope it makes sense the timelines in my stories had got thrown out of wack by something that happened in the future in The Universe: Owen's story. However as everyone knows the future for us is Jack's past, so the thing that happened messed up the timelines in the present, (for full details read Owen's Story this link will lead you there http://miss-shine.livejournal.com/7965.com ). Anyway the thing that happened gets fixed by a certain time lord, (you'll have to wait until part nine for full details of that one) and everyone goes back to where they were before the timelines changed. Hope that makes sense and I hope this makes sense, here part eight,

Part seven was here - http://miss-shine.livejournal.com/7761.html

The salty sea air filled Ianto Jones’ lungs and the cold steel of the railings felt good under his warm hands. It was the thirteen of April 1912 and Ianto stood silently on the deck of the Titanic tomorrow this entire ship would be resting on the bottom of the ocean. He felt his stomach churning once more at the thought of it he had been staying in the staff quarters. He had meet a young man called Thomas Brown who had let him stay in his room, with four members of the kitchen none of whom spoke any English.

Thomas, Tom as he told Ianto to called him was a young brunette who reminded him of Jack. Expect he had brown eyes and was a bit shyer then Jack but he had this way of looking at him that just reminded him of Jack so much that it hurt. He couldn’t help thinking of him and his child.

He had to keep reminding himself of Jack’s message through time telling him that his child had been born and that she was safe. He kept trying to imagine what she looked like would she have his eyes or Jack’s? His nose or Jack’s? His mouth or Jack’s? Just thinking about it made him yarn for them both he had never even made his little girl but he dreamt about her every time he closed his eyes. Well almost every time, sometimes he had strange dreams where He, Owen and Toshiko where running around the sewers or breaking into UNIT.

The sun had set about two hours ago yet Ianto still stood on the deck and looked out to sea. He sighed a heavy sigh as he thought of his last date with Jack; now looking back at it he realised that was the night they must have conceived their daughter. “What are you up to?” asked a voice. Ianto turned to see Tom standing next to him.

“Just thinking” he heard himself say.

“You want to come and do something fun?” he asked. Ianto turned towards him a confused expression on his face.

“Don’t you have to work?” he asked him.

“We get one night off a voyage” he answered with a smile. “Everyone knows that the best night to be had is in third class.” Ianto smiled remembering the film Lisa had made him go to the cinema to see it three times. He remembered Leo and Kate dancing in the mess room.

Tom offered his arm Ianto grinned and took it, “Do you they think they’ll throw us over if they see us walking around like this?” Ianto asked.

“No,” said Tom but he clearly didn’t believe himself because he let go of Ianto’s arm. They made their way down to third class. As they approached the hall Ianto could hear the music. He could help but smile for a moment he forgot about Jack and his little girl and for one night… maybe his last night on earth. He had fun, he drunk way too much and danced his ass off. The last time Ianto danced it was with Jack at Gwen’s wedding but this was different in everyway. It felt different for a start, dancing so close to Jack that he could smell him made him feel safe and loved. Dancing like a manic in a room in the hull of a ship that smelt of beer and sweat made him feel wild, free and alive in away that he have never felt before.

Tom handed him another beer at about one in the morning, his sixth off the night. He grabbed his arm and pulled him over to a table where a couple of guys where playing a game of cards. They sat down and the rules of the game were explained to Ianto, if you lost around instead of having to pay money they had to down their pints. Ianto lost eight rounds and had to down eight pints, he didn’t mind and continued to dance like an idiot to the Irish music. It Ianto’s mind at that point in town he was the most amazing dancer on the face of the earth.

At about two thirty Ianto walked back to the room while being propped up by Tom. He opened the door and while trying to be quiet because the chef’s would be asleep already, they fell into the room. Ianto giggled to himself as Tom pulled him to his feet, “If I didn’t know better” slurred Ianto, “I would think that you were trying to get me drunk tonight.” Ianto laughed again and then…Tom moved towards him. He reached up and run his fingers through Ianto’s hair, he stopped giggling. Tom moved closer towards him now he was less then an inch away from him. His hand was on the back of Ianto’s head Tom leant in and their lips meet for the first time. Ianto opened his month and let Tom push his tongue into his mouth. Ianto allowed himself to kiss Tom back; he wrapped his arms around Tom’s waist. It was a beautiful, passionate moment.

As Ianto stirred the next day his head hurt a lot. He hadn't had a hang over this bad since college.
‘Oh shit’ thought Ianto as he remembered Tom pushing him against the bunks and kissing him shortly before passing out. Ianto sat up so fast the he hit his head on the underside of Tom’s bunk. “Bullocks” he said aloud, and then he covered his mouth with his hand and looked around the room. He was alone; Ianto moved over to the tiny mirror that one of the German chefs had nailed to the door. He noticed that he was still fully dressed expect he didn’t have his suit jacket or tie on.

He washed his face in the little sink and checked his watch for the time. It was almost twelve o’clock in the afternoon the last day that the Titanic would stay afloat. He noticed a letter on the floor he bent down and picked it up. It was from Tom thanking him for an amazing night and telling him that he had gone to work and would be back around two. Ianto was beginning to wonder how much he couldn’t remember… did they have sex?

Did he cheat on the man he loved and carried his child who risked his life to defend her. Who had been raising her for at least the last eighteen months? Ianto felt physically sick and dizzy Tom had left him a note like the ones that Jack used to leave him. When he woke up in the middle of the night and when for one of his walks, or when he stayed at Ianto’s but left for the hub before Ianto woke up. Tom had left him the kind of note a lover leaves to stop their partner worrying. He had a lump in his throat he felt the tears burning in his eyes. Ianto slipped to the floor and sat there staring at thin air trying to make his brain remember every detail about the night before.

Ianto did the cowardly thing and left the room before Tom returned during his lunch break. He took a long walk around the ship and bumped into a lady he had meet a few days earlier when he was walking around the deck. Her name was Molly Brown; he had tea with in the first class lounge and blushed when Tom came over to serve them. He gave Ianto a look like thunder, like he would never forgive him. Ianto kicked himself for ruining his last day on earth.

The rest of the day pasted in a blur of cocktails and laughing with Molly he hugged her once he had walked her back to her room at seven o’clock. The Titanic sunk at eleven forty. He went back to his room and waited he hoped that Tom would return to the room before then so that he could clear the guilt from his mind. So that he could perhaps make it up to him a little, he must have looked like a right bastard. Not waiting in the room for him and then having afternoon tea and cocktails while he waited on him. Ianto fell asleep on his bunk and didn’t wake up until a hand touched his cheek. He opened his eyes to see Tom standing over him. “What time is it?” he asked desperately.

“Twenty past eleven” Tom answered.

“Shit we’ve got to get to the lifeboat deck” Ianto told him urgency filling his voice. He jumped out of his bed grabbed Tom by the hand and raced out of the room. They ran as fast as Ianto could drag them up to the top deck. They stood at the front of the ship, it was thirty seven minutes pasted the hour. The look outs rang the bell Ianto could hear them shouting ice burg ahead as shattered ice fell onto the deck. Tom pulled Ianto out of the way, “how did you know?” he asked.

The ship was about to sink, Tom about to die perhaps he would as well but he had to ask. “What happened last night, after we kissed?”

“Nothing” Tom replied, “You vomited in the sink and then fell asleep.” Although Ianto still felt guilty about kissing him. He was reliefed that he hadn’t slept with him. Jack was an understanding lover, in time (Jack had plenty of it) he would have forgiven Ianto. But Ianto would have never forgiven himself.

Soon the Captain called all hands to the deck and Tom ran off looking worried, saying “I’ll find you when I know what’s going on… I promise.” That was the last time that Ianto Jones ever saw him. The young man that was kind to him and who fancied him.

After that the odd calm that had gripped the ship since it hit the ice burg quickly turned into panic, which as the ship filled with water turned into chaos. Someone was handing out life jackets Ianto grabbed one. Suddenly he was filled with panic he had been sure that if he just stayed on the ship the team would come for him. But now it seemed like they weren’t coming at all, if he had thought for a moment that they wouldn’t find him he would have jumped ship when it stopped at Cork.

He couldn’t think straight he didn’t know what to do all he could think about was the fucking film. He remembered that the ship would go down by the nose so he decided to head for the back of the ship. All around him people where screaming and pushing some body pushed him to the ground in an effort to get to the lifeboats.

People didn’t notice him on the floor and they started to trample him. He covered his head with his arms as the tears started to flow down his face, he should have told Jack he loved him more. He should have made Owen open the rift so he could have seen his little girl.

He tried to get to his feet but people kept shoving into his and knocking him back down. The ship was starting to sink very fast now and people where getting more desperate. Somebody grabbed Ianto off the floor only to punch him back down again.

He was a rough looking man who kept kicking and punching Ianto. He was trying to get the life jacket off Ianto, the man hit him again when Ianto struggled against him. Somebody grabbed the man from behind and hit him in the face knocking him out. Ianto looked into the man’s face. His heart skipped a beat and even amongst this chaos Ianto only had one question, “Where’s my daughter?”

“She’s safe with Gwen” Jack Harkness held out his hand for Ianto, who grabbed it and was pulled to his feet. “Let’s get you out of here” Ianto wrapped his arms around Jack as he punched something into his vortex manipulator. There was a bright light and a lot of spinning and suddenly Ianto found himself standing once again in the hub…he was home.
