K. Kinds of Books You Won’t Read (asked by
kelly_chambliss)
When I was a kid, I'd read just about anything. These days, however, I'm jaded and cranky and aware that life is too short to waste on books I don't like when there are gazillions of amazing things I'll never be able to read... So while I will never say never, here are some types of books it would take a LOT to make me pick up:
- smug banal nonsense posing as meaningful and spiritual, even philosophical literature (Paolo Coelho, I'm looking at you)
- urban fantasy for teenagers about hot and brooding vampires (unattractive and brooding vampires, otoh, I might give a chance)
- grimdark stuff wallowing in graphic violence and rape for the sake of being ~edgy
- meta-ish hard-to-access novels about writers struggling with the limitations of language (I get enough of that from my own frustrations with writing and from those of my fandom friends)
- self-pitying stories (fiction or memoirs) about how hard it is to be a tormented young man surrounded by women who just won't put out
I could list others, but I feel like I've been snobbish and awful enough already...
