Operation: Move David And Anna To Birmingham proceeds. There is, however, one tiny small stumbling block in the road; Me. I am incapable of sorting my shit out. I am stressing about everything, and so far have failed to apply for the one job I looked at and went "yeah". I have frozen up. I really really want to move to Brum. It's a lovely city ( Read more... )

Whenever I feel profoundly unhappy with my life, I actively look for big red buttons to push, which will shake up my world in new and interesting ways. They haven't turned out badly yet. Making any decision is usually a better decision than not making any decision, because not making any decision is a decision in unto itself, and it's usually a bad decision. Decision, decision, decision.

I'm happy to provide you with any support you might need. What's this job you're interested in?

It was at the brum children's hospital, but unfortunately I think its too late, since the closing date has passed. I don't know if I even want to stay in the NHS any more. I like secretarial work, I find it enjoyable and fulfilling. I like working for the NHS. I know some people dislike the feeling of being a little cog in a giant machine, but I love it. I am quite a mundane and boring person, really. I just want a job that I can do and then forget all about until I have to go back, ideally with people I don't hate. I don't want to work "voluntary" overtime ever again.

What's your skillset? What are you most good at in your current job? What are you good at outside of your current job that you'd like to be able to do bring into your work?

Come on...let's brainstorm.

skillset? I'm a quick, accurate typist, I've got a good telephone manner and I can deal quickly and efficiently with telephone queries. I have a working knowledge of Word, Powerpoint and Outlook, and a vague idea of Excel. I maintain a filing system, control the inpatient diary and the diary of non-patient appointments for two consultants. I take minutes. I draft letters to patients and other departments etc. I keep a record of holidays for my consultants.

I'm a secretary. It's all basic admin and organisational stuff, with a great big dolloping spoonful of audio/copy typing and medical terminology.

If you plan to jobhunt in the private sector, you will need a CV. I'd be happy to put one together for you with your input. Will you be on MSN tonight?

I will be, and I still don't know how I feel about private sector work, but I think I am willing to give it a shot. I just like the security that comes with public sector work. Also I've put a couple thousand quid into the NHS pension plan...

Well, most of the jobs are in the private sector. The application process also has a considerably faster turnaround time than for public sector jobs, which would be useful given the whole relocation plan. I'd advise against swearing off the private sector, simply because their jobs are quicker and easier to get ( ... )
