I don't fully agree, but I think we can use self-hatred to keep a sense of balance. For example, surprisingly a lot of people tell me I'm attractive, I get told all the time, but to keep it from going to my head I convince myself that I'm not. If someone tells me I'm unattractive I balance it my reminding myself about all the people who do. This way I am confident enough to approach someone who is also attractive, but at the same time I don't walk around with any silly notions that I am "too good" for someone else or any such nonsense...make sense?
