You may have noticed that I don't tend to write honorifics. This is a holdover from fandoms where honorifics and other Japanese would get you branded a weeaboo. I really should change this habit, especially since honorifics seem to be the norm in DDD...
I've been thinking about the way Shirou talks. He addresses Rin as 'Tohsaka' for a good ways into the series - I can't go check right now when/if he switches to her first name. Even after the first couple of life-or-death battles with each other, he's still using Tohsaka, and she's addressing him as Emiya-kun.
On the other hand, he addresses Sakura, Shinji, and Issei by their first names. Sakura, we know he's known since at least before Kiritsugu died, and it's probable that he's known Shinji for just as long, so that leaves Issei.
Issei refers to Shirou by his last name. That's usually an indication of not being close, but he refers to Kuzuki by his last name, too, and with an honorific, and he says he considers Kuzuki to be like a brother to him.
...does he refer to Saber with an honorific? Can't go back and check because dangit, don't have the game anymore.
I don't know much about Issei's honorific using habits, really, because the only people he talks to are his best friend (no honorific) and his mortal enemy (no honorific).
Anyway, I'd like to say that they're pretty close. Probably haven't known each other as long as Sakura's known him, but pretty long.
Needless to say, there will be a point in Broken Phantasm when Issei switches to using Shirou's first name.
Less nit-picky detail: I need to know the story behind this Hollow Ataraxia CG. There is no way that cannot be slashy.
EDIT: In the prologue to Hollow Ataraxia, Issei refers to Kaede by her last name, no honorific. Hmm.
