Why should I have to pay more in taxes than it presently costs me for healthcare? So your dad is covered? Why would I care? He's not my dad. I have zero responsibility to pay a penny on his behalf.

Universal Health care is form of insurance, like pensions, or unemployment insurance, or any social programs. Government takes money from rich and you when you are well off and pays you when you are down and out of luck (ill).
Most people find this preferable than dying on the streets or from illness when out of luck. And anybody can have problems. Because of this, these programs are popular and people vote for them. And so this becomes laws and one of main functions of modern government. And after it becomes law, you opinion “ I have zero responsibility to pay a penny on his behalf” doesn’t interest anybody.
Of course you can refuse to pay taxes - they will promptly put you in jail , ignoring your opinion and your “freedom”.
