June update

It's been a busy month. I'm going to split this one up, like I usually do.

Family: Pretty quiet on that front, only two storms have been brewing. My aunt appears to not be in remission following her surgery and radiation. She has said she will not take any therapies, particularly if the doctors suggest amputation of her leg. She's 75, she feels she has lived a full and happy life and is ready to die. The other storm involves Jay's brother, D. D. called a couple of months ago to borrow money to fly to our niece's high school graduation. Okay... you've known about this for years now and you couldn't save up the money??? Well, Jay booked the ticket. D. never looked at it, and showed up at the airport a day late for his flight. Called Jay again. New ticket booked, to the tune of $1300. A very, very displeased wife I was. I sulked for 2 days straight, then had a long talk with Jay about how we need to limit the financial bullshit with our family. I cut off my sister, you cut off your brother. He has a job, he is just an irresponsible idiot and should pay for his mistakes, not us!

Fun things: I have been trying to get more fun stuff into my life. I've been reading more, limiting the TV time, and planning outings for us on the weekends. We have visited the Getty Villa finally, and we've also taken part in the ACS Long Beach Relay for Life. I'm most of the way through the entire Anne of Green Gables series. I love those books! I also finished reading Brave New World by Aldus Huxley, and I have almost finished Microcosm by Carl Zimmer. It feels great to be reading again! I am also going to look more seriously into some drawing classes to get back into that.

Lab stuff: I attended a WIST conference in San Diego that re-ignited my passion for science, and I think I want to go into the biofuels industry. I have a lot of ideas for energy production involving microbiology, and I think I would enjoy working in an industrial setting. I also got my NRSA funded, which means another 2 years in this post-doc. Right now I am very depressed at the idea of trying to beat my head against the wall on this project another 2 years. I guess I can hang in there. It gets depressing sometimes. I should love my job! I used to!

I guess that's about all right now. I'm looking for a new dress for my niece's wedding, but I swear to god that's the last article of clothing I'm buying this summer! My shopping habits are back out of control!
