The Adventures of Goob- Pharmaceutical Guinea Pig!

Back from the doctor with a shiny new prescription for 30 days worth of Zoloft. Doc was awesome, like usual, and asked a lot of questions. One of the things I really like about her is that she addresses the questions to Goober. She treats HIM like the patient, instead of him as an extension of me. And after he answers, she comes to me for follow up or elaboration, because, well, he's TEN, but still. It goes a long way toward setting my mind at ease for when he's older, that she'll be used to his way of answering and he way HE feels about what his body/mind are doing, and not constantly relying on my filter.

So she asked what was wrong and I told her all about the calls from school and the things the teachers have said. She talked to him a bit and they talked about why he gets all stressed out and why he reacts the way he does. She asked whether he liked school and why not. She talked to him a little bit about why it was important to do well in school.

She said that she thinks the best course of action right now is to do a ADHD/SSRI combo. But there haven't been many clinical trials for anti-depressants in children, so she wants to start him on the antidepressant and get that equalized in his system and watch for side-effects.Then we'll add in the ADHD meds, since we already know how he reacts to that.

So, for now, we're going to attempt this. I haven't made any final decisions about keeping him in school or anything yet, because I want to try this first. I'm hopeful, but when I was on Zoloft, I was EXTREMELY unhappy with it. I'm going to keep a strong eye on the kid and we'll see what happens. He's going back to the doc in a month and we'll adjust or change as needed then.

goober, everyone here is a crazy person
