James Lester had spent too long jetting from country to country to have a fear of flying. The drawn-out process of checking in on the other hand?

He shifted his weight and sighed inwardly. The queue was twenty people deep, and it crawled forward at a snail's pace. Quite what the delay was, he had no idea, but so much for pre-booking. And while James was British to his core and usually tolerant of the whole system, he'd been out of Britain for eight days. Nothing really, but it felt like forever and he wanted to go home.

To rain instead of incessant sunshine, to tea and biscuits, and gridlock traffic. But more than anything else, he wanted to get back to the auburn-haired astrophysicist that had utterly captivated him.

A broad grin split his face at the recall of how they'd met. If first impressions counted, he supposed being hit in the face by a door ought to be a bad one, and yes it had hurt, but it was afterwards that had left the stronger impression.

“Sir?”

James blinked at the realisation he'd made it to the front of the queue. The wait had slipped past unnoticed at thought of those serious eyes, the rare smile, the way she lit up when she talked about her work. She'd intelligence in spades, enthusiasm to match and a wicked sense of humour that drew at him across the miles. He imagined that even if the idea of being in a thin-skinned, narrow tube twenty thousand feet above the world terrified him, he'd still climb aboard in order to obey that elusive call.

Cleared through security, he walked the corridor and boarded, seating himself in first-class. And as the aeroplane lined up on the runway, he wondered if Alexis minded flying. He hoped not, because he wanted to take her so high, so far. He might not be able to give her the stars, but he could give her the Earth.
