He's still shaking when the ambulance pulls in. Horror flutters at the corners of his consciousness, kept at bay by the fear clutching his chest. The paramedic opens the rear door. The driver is already waiting. They pull the gurney out with practised ease, the paramedic holding the drip bag aloft. “Gunshot wound to the lower abdomen,” he reports, voice terse. “She's lost a lot of blood.”
The nurse tries to turn him away, but he can't leave. He needs to know if she's going to be all right.
The electric blue line gives him no answer.
