Some notes for X-Men First Class fanfiction writers:

1) Charles Xavier has no qualms about going into people’s heads and fishing around.  He’s only ever asked Erik for permission and said that he promised Raven and only Raven not to do so (and failed at it).

2) Charles Xavier is not weak.  To quote Pulp Fiction: Does he look like a bitch to you?

3) Raven is an empowered creature.  We don’t see it ( Read more... )

So I guess writing fanfiction now means playing by the book?

Well if you want it to be realistic to the time period, there's some degree of research or knowing the period involved. :0

That's what I like about period fic, anyway. But to each his/her own.

I absolutely agree. However there are quite a few more items listed here than just being period accurate.

What I like about fanfiction is that it's not particularly stressful and generally opens you to a world of options. Which makes the introduction of suggested guidelines bizarre, to me.

I should also say I have nothing to do with this fandom apart from a distant appreciation of the insane homoerotica present in the movie, and I don't really write fanfiction unless I damn well do it right. Just pitching in my two cents.

I like options, but when stuff deviates so far from canon as to no longer be recognizable as the characters I liked in the first place, it just knocks me right out of the story.

I generally prefer my fic as close to canon as possible, with minor changes that are still believable and true to the characters or the story.

Well, good fanfiction is believable, right? That means that it needs to be in character and needs to make sense in it's time period.

People can write fanfiction however they like, but if they want people to actually like it and comment, they've got to go about it the right way.

Plus, the stuff at the bottom regarding canon are just some extra notes rather than things that have pissed me off while reading x-men first class fic (which is pretty much all this post is).
