But the light in Leroy’s eyes was too disturbing to be a happy fantasy of his own. Jin Craig was their mutual enemy, but Michael didn’t like this man. There was something about him that was off, as though the wiring in his head had disconnected somewhere and left an empty space where his sanity should be.
And besides…if something seemed too good to be true, it probably was.
Michael stood up and walked over to the cabinets behind Leroy, pretending to study their polished surfaces. Really he just wanted to get away from Leroy’s frightening stare.
“So,” said Michael. “I’ll be become the tool that you and your friends use to take down Jin Craig.”
“Yes,” said Leroy. Though Michael wasn’t looking at his face, he couldn’t miss the eagerness in his voice. “You’ll be the one to actually kill her when the time comes.”
Excitement leapt in Michael’s chest, but he forced it down.
“And you’ll give me this apartment?”
“That’s right. No rent or anything. Same with all of your equipment and whatever expenses you incur along the way.”
“Wow, that sounds like a pretty good deal,” said Michael. “So…what do you get out of it?”
He turned to see Leroy looking mildly amused. “I get Jin Craig dead, don’t I?”
“And that’s all you want? It would be a lot cheaper to do it yourself, wouldn’t it?”
“Yes, but it’s too risky,” said Leroy. “If I, or my colleagues, get caught then it’ll bring scandal down on the whole Shiloh Police Department. Besides, our day job has a fair amount of overtime-we can’t devote all the time we need. This is going to be a major campaign you’re going on, a full time job.”
It sounded reasonable enough, but still Michael wasn’t convinced. This Leroy didn’t have much of a poker face, and his face said that he was hiding something.
