Samael: Chapter Two, Page Five

“Now Michael,” said Leroy, straightening with professional purpose as though a meeting of some kind had begun. “You’re going to have to do some thinking about what you really want. Do you really want revenge on Jin Craig?”

“Yes,” said Michael, without a moment’s pause.

“Listen to me now and think this through! I’m not talking about a flashy gun battle or a dramatic movie fight scene! I’m talking about taking years out of your life to chip away at that bitch’s barriers until she can be killed.”

“Years?” said Michael incredulously. “Why? If you’re a police commissioner, why can’t you get a sniper rifle or something?”

“Jin isn’t stupid. There’s not a window in her house that isn’t bullet-proof, barred and tinted at the very least and she never goes anywhere without bodyguards.

“You see…she’s into a lot. She’s the latest heir to an organize crime ring that goes back for generations in this area called Spider Kings. She’s got connections all over the country, and recent reports say she’s looking to go outside it. Jin needs to be stopped before she can expand that far.

“I can’t do that. Legally I’ve got nothing to even arrest her on-she has too many people covering for her, including some cops, much as it shames me to say it. And all that charity work has turned her into Mother-Goddamn-Teresa in most people’s eyes. If I even tried to suggest she was dirty I’d probably be fired.

“But you’re not alone in being hurt by her. There’s a few of us on the force who know what she is and want her ruined…and you can do it. We can give you the resources you need, if you can assure us you’re not going to run up to her door like a jackass again. We can help you kill her.”

The surrealism of the situation was making Michael’s head spin. This couldn’t be real, could it? It was like he’d seen XXX too many times and internalized the dialogue…or maybe it was his grief-roasted mind coming up with a revenge fantasy?
