The moment Amber disappeared through the door, the safe, comfortable feeling vanished with her. Standing alone in the dark, Olivia felt more vulnerable and afraid than she'd ever been, despite being in such a familiar place. Olivia tried to follow Amber, only to grow more and more afraid as she went. The closer she got to the bathroom, the worse she felt, until her stomach was roiling and nausea nearly overwhelmed her.
This wasn't...normal. Certainly, anyone would feel anxious looking at Amber panicking the way she just had, but Olivia was doubled over hyperventilating and fighting an urge to bolt for her room, lock the door, and hide under the covers. There was something wrong going on in the bathroom, but what? Olivia didn't hear a thing from behind the door, so how bad could it be?
It took several seconds for Olivia to move. There's nothing wrong, she told herself over and over, it's just a bathroom, you've been in that bathroom a dozen times, and when you go in it'll be just the same now, with its marble sinks and tile floor...
Olivia didn't believe it, but she went in anyway.
The moment she stepped through the door, she was almost blasted right back out again by the volume of noise that met her ears. Screaming and banging and yelling and an inhuman roar that eclipsed them all.
Olivia flattened herself against the wall and tried to make sense of what she was seeing. Figures were blurred and her vision was blackening around the edges. She took deep breaths only to gag on putrid air.
Crouching low, Olivia shut her eyes until her head stopped spinning, and then opened them again.
