Had a bit more energy tonight and with the aid of a stool in case of wobbly moments and lots of painkillers, I managed to make venison pie! The venison was from the road kill deer I found earlier in the year and the recipe has star anise (whole, taken out after cooking), chilli (same as the star anise) and cinnamon in it (stick, same as the other two) and fresh ginger. Added to tomato puree, garlic, onion and some other bits and pieces to make a rich, slowly simmered sauce, put a puff pastry top on and wow, even I can't make that taste horrid!
The recipe is from the current UK issue of Good Food and is actually for beef, but I prefer venison and it was also what I had in the freezer. Whatever meat you use though, I would thoroughly recommend it!
