Painting with Jaesu

I take my usual seat on the far side of the room, right next to the large window letting sunlight flood in. The room’s easels are arranged in a large circle, with a display or work of art always placed in the center. I set down my bag, open the painting palette, and ready my pencils and everything. I settle back, waiting for the other two to show up, the two that never failed to amuse me in this class. As per schedule, right on time the two of them come in, taking their seats right across from me.

The more athletically-built blond sits closer to the window while the more energetic redhead sat farther in the room. Rather, they are both very energetic. The blond would be talking to the redhead ever so often, then let out a laugh and swat the other’s shoulder, as the redhead would grin and laugh an infectious laugh.

They seemed to be very close, always stuck together talking. I never approached but found it much amusing to follow their antics from afar, finding them...‘adorkable,’ as Hyo yeon said once when she heard me recount the stories.

The others came in and we started on our project of the week- watercolor painting. Today the blond seems to be happy about something.

“Junsu ya” I hear him say. The redhead turns around. The blond murmurs something to Junsu and then shows off his cellphone, on which was newly attached a not-so-tiny elephant plushie.

“Igeo mo ya? What on earth is-” Junsu makes a face, amused as he turns the plushie over in his hands.

Jaejoong swells his chest in pride. “I’ve named him, ‘Kokki kokki.’”

Junsu guffaws and bursts out laughing. “Pu-hahahaa ‘kokkikokki’” It takes awhile before he calms down.

“Jaejoongi hyung” he says to the now pouting blond beside him. Sweet...now I don’t have to refer to them as 'the blond' and 'the redhead.'

Jaejoong ignores him. Junsu shakes his head. But then he takes out his phone and starts showing his “Jaejoongi hyung” some photos with a proud face plastered on, talking about his “Tigger” and “Leo” and “Bakira,” pets I assume, possibly cats. Who’d ever name a dog “tigger” or “leo”?

Jaejoong whines and makes a face, saying he’s lucky he has four in his apartment, he has only one, a temperamental kitty with a mind of its own. They quiet down and paint in silence for a while, eyes darting from the fruit display to their easels.

I’ve seen their art displayed in the art department. Very beautiful and unique in their own way. The blond- I mean, Jaejoong’s- sketches are more wispy and airy, Junsu’s are more sharp, bold. My paintings have been donated to a charity I worked with.

Jaejoong starts singing something, a surprisingly soft, soothing voice- clear like a bell. It surprised me. Is this a new side of the two of them?

“Like a melody and harmony in art...” Jaejoong sings but stops, unsatisfied. “Like a melody and harmony in heart...”

“No no no hyung...you should put ‘like a melody and harmony in love’ ”

Jaejoong sings it, mouthing the words and turning them over slowly in his mouth before nodding his approval. “Hmm I like that better...thanks Junsu...”

Junsu merely nods, eyes back on his painting. “Ayy girl” he sings softly, which causes me to stop and look up at him from the rim of my easel queerly.

“Ayy girl” this time Jaejoong harmonizes with him and then the two hum a tune.

I make a mental note to ask Yoochun next time if his dolphin and elephant had red and blonde hair.

“Ok guys, that wraps up today’s class. Next week, we start the nude model figure sketching. This will be our model.”

“Good lord,” I hear Jaejoong say. Over the top of my easel I see him flick his tongue over his lips and whistle low. I try not to chuckle. Junsu silently stares in the same directions, murmuring “he’s definitely a magazine model.”

“He should come here every day...how come I haven’t seen him around campus?” Jaejoong murmurs.

I finally snap close my paints and look up to where they were looking towards the door. I murmur “Oh, hell.”

And there, standing tall, taller than everyone else was mister Changmin himself, changed in black skinny jeans and a blue and white plaid button down, opened at the collar.

His eyes rove over the room as he nods and politely smiles at others. Soon his eyes find mine, see my mortified face.

The widest smirk I’ve ever seen spreads over his face as he comprehends and looks forward to what will come next week.
