Pennsic Bags Posted

An amazing team of folks all interested in embellishment made the Pennsic Bags a reality this summer.

All of the embellishers were non-Laurels, but perhaps, one day, they may be. They were a good crew of workers with great attitudes.

Their direction? Given both devices for a set of royalty, they were to choose an element and embellish that on an 8 x 9 inch piece of wool using wool or linen by July Coronation. Having made the wool bags myself and blanket stitched the sides and flap prior to the event with the help of HL Gaeira and HE Alina, the patches were then couched down onto the flaps at Coronation. I had attached the names of the embellisher, Kingdom, and King & Queen as well as pictures of the original device and King and Queen to the bags. This assisted Their Majesties Cedric and Elizabeth when they sought out the other Crowns for distribution of the bags. Each bag contained two cups made by Mistress Gwen the Potter, a lampwork bead by HL Sophia of Druim Doineann, sewing kits in small blanket stitched bags constructed by Her Excellency Alina of Folkstone, and a variety of small items donated by Blatha an Oir.

The bags were a big hit at Pennsic. According to His Majesty Cedric, "There were many happy queens!"

We had a fantastic display of the largesse and bags at July Coronation in the Artisan's Village. My reasoning- give the populace ideas on what they could contribute, give the contributing artisans exposure, and share their amazing talents with the rest of An Tir before the items were packed up and shipped away.

***Please Note: These photos were taken at July Coronation. They do not do the embellished patches justice. Some were not smoothed out and seem uneven. All were cut and squared up as well as proportioned. The camera angle does not show this.

AEthelmearc- Maynard Von Dem Steine and Líadain ní Dheirdre Chaomhánaigh
(Sir Rodrigo- Barony of Stromgard)
This was Uncle Rod's first applique. He completed it on time and was happy to participate. This turned out much better than the napkin he tried to embroider on the way to Pennsic with us in 2007 when he nearly got us kicked off the plane by threatening Arnsbjorn with his sewing scissors! Soon, he was trading sewing tips with the stewardess and other passengers. Go Rod, Go!

Ansteorra- Hrafn Olafsson and Elizabeta di Valore della Rosa
(Baroness ALINA of Folkstone- - Barony of Stromgard)
HE Alina chose a Norse Crow to fit His Majesty's persona.

Artemesia- Michael O'Brien and Sati al-Isfahaniyya
(HL FREYDIS- of the Ship Crew)
This was Freydis' first attempt at applique. Her butterfly turned out really nicely.

Atenveldt- Craven and Elzbieta
(BARONESS AMICE DE CHATILLON- - Barony of Stromgard)
Amice participated in the Pennsic 2007 bags. Check out the silver wire weaving Her Excellency Amice did. She chose to reproduce the whole device. WOW! Amice was able to meet Her Majesty Elzbieta at July Coronation. The Queen was absolutely lovely and impressed with Amice's handiwork.

Atlantia- Logan Ebonwoulfe and Esa Kirkepatrike (HL HELGA in LOMA- - Barony of Stromgard)
Tiernan picked this as his favorite. Notice the nice stitches. Helga has done bags and garb for several crowns.

Caid- Edward Senestre II & Mora de Buchanan II (HL GaeIRA- - Barony of Stromgard)
Freehand embroidery done right- Good Job! Gaeira's first idea was to have the queen's owl grasping the king's boar in it's claws and flying away just for kicks, but settled on using just the boar.

Calontir- Martino Michele Venèri III and Ariel of Glastonbury Tor III
(Duchess Signy Oxendahl- - Barony of Wealdsmere)
This was the third reign for His Majesty, so Signy chose to use three crowns. She did a terrific job with the couching and incorporating all of His Majesty's colors. The good duchess has participated before with the finishing on bags for her reigns.

Drachenwald- Gerhardt von Wustenburg and Judith de Northumbria
(HL MOIRA - Barony of Stromgard)
Moira's patch was very crisp and striking. She's excited to make more.

Ealdormere- Roak of Ealdormere IV and Jocea Valente II
(Duchess Signy Oxendahl- - Barony of Wealdsmere)
Her Grace was gracious enough to take on two patches and did an outstanding job on both. Nice even spacing on those stitches.

East- Andreas Eisfalke Von Ulm IV and Gabriella von Ulm II
(Baroness Rosamund of the Misty Meadow- Barony of Aquaterra)
Her Excellency filled in during the week prior to Coronation with two machine embroidered patches for the East- one for both the King and Queen and one for the queen to give in the form of the queen's personal favor. His Majesty's device was quite complex.

Gleann Abhann- Loric Silvestris and Diana
(Lady AMIA - Shire of River’s Bend)
Lady Amia participated in the Pennsic 2007 bag embellishment, as well. She gladly chose this device since her personal device is also a seahorse.

Lochac- Sir Gabriel de Beaumont and Mistress Constanzia Morales y de Zamora
(HL MAGDA- Shire of River’s Bend)
Magda does beautiful work. She researched the type of cross and was the first to complete her patch even though she had just completed a wedding dress, too! Magda participated in the Pennsic 2007 bags.

Meridies- Godwine and Francesca
(HL Giacinta- Shire of Ramsgaard of Tir Righ)
The detail on this design is impressive. Giacintha used all of Her Majesty's favorite colors. Her Majesty does not have a device, yet. So, Giacintha had a challenge of deciding what motif to create. Nicely done.

Due to a transporting snafu, Giancintha's patch did not make it to JC on time (no fault), so Her Royal Highness Wrenn made an extra patch in His Majesty of Meridies' favorite colors since he has no device.

And, since she was a on a roll, Her Royal Highness Wrenn also made this based on a period pattern.

Middle- EikBrandr and Runa
(Mistress ARWEN- Barony of Stromgard)
His Majesty uses a black raven for his personal symbol. Arwen's rendition is a very close match and compliments the Norse persona of the king.

Northshield- Stephen Du Bois and Ailleanne ingen Faelin
(Baroness Rosamund of the Misty Meadow- Barony of Aquaterra)
Her Excellency created three patches with her machine embroiderer for the Crowns of Northshield who do not have devices, yet.

Outlands- Maelgwn III & Sabine
(Lady CHRISTAL- Shire of Dragon’s Mist)
Oh, my goodness! Christal did an amazing job of stitching the white background of the castle onto the patch creating nice texture. AWESOME!

Trimaris- Kurn O'Farrell, the Hound of Ulster & Eridani Aureas
(HL Dana the Sweet)
The simple choice of scheme really stood out on the bag. HL Dana also donated two norse linen caps and two lengths of card woven trim.

West- Alden of Wolverton and Constantina von Ravenna
(Baroness ALINA of Folkstone- Barony of Stromgard)
Her Excellency completed TWO patches and would have done more if we had them! This design really popped! Nice even stitches.

Ealdormere Royal Children's Bags- Crafted completely by Her Royal Highness Wrenn all in one day. What an over achiever! She even filled each with age and gender appropriate items for each child. Wow! Very considerate! So, that's four bags for Wrenn- WINNER!
