30 Days of TV: Day 12

Day 12: An episode you’ve watched more than 5 times:

The Eleventh Hour from Doctor Who

When I first heard that Tennant was leaving, I was pretty sad. And the first photos of Matt Smith as the Doctor made me wonder if someone over in Cardiff didn't need their head checked. I'll admit, things started looking up when I saw the first previews that came out. I just like the concept of Doctor Who and so I decided to be more open minded about the new team.

And wow, did Matt Smith have me by minute ten of the Eleventh Hour.

Right out of the gate, the Eleventh Hour was interesting. Matt Smith has got the most strangely attractive face and body. He does wonderful things with the physicality of the role. And his scenes with little Amelia were fantastic. I could do without the silly food scene but for the ridiculous faces they get to make at each other and for the space it creates in letting the two characters connect. He clearly made a huge impact on her childhood and it's nice to see the follow through in the rest of the episode.

I would have done more from this episode but I found myself wanting to pull shots from almost every scene and that felt a little absurd.

I'm really enjoying this season. It has high and immediate re-watch value, even for me. I can't wait for the second half of this series and in the mean time, I'll probably watch this episode more times than is necessarily healthy.

Runners up:
- Pie-lette from Pushing Daisies, I actually watched it twice in a row when I first saw it because I was so charmed by it
- Rising from Stargate Atlantis, it's still an episode I go back to because I really like the introduction and it's SGA at it's... well, purest. I like the concept more than the actual execution of Atlantis and so I sometimes go back and watch Rising to just imagine where it could have gone from there
- Window of Opportunity from SG-1, my father calls this the "fruit loop" episode. I love this episode, it's funny and cute and it's got a nice emotional moment at the end with Jack. It's an episode I don't get tired of. Also, great use of Teal'c. The man is funny and very droll.
- Pilot from Life. I clearly have a thing for pilots, especially pilots where the show already knows who it is at the core even if it's later not sustained in the series. Some shows take time to find their voice and others know their voice right away. I thought this episode was a great introduction to the characters and used the interviewer/documentary stuff as exposition very well and it never felt overused as a device. I love seeing Charlie connect with the families and watching Dani having her patience tried by Charlie's strangeness.
