Sorry that there isn't more.
I had bad writers' block.
Suicide Note
Chapter Four (Part III)
Worry
Laura had wasted another afternoon in class. She was restless as usual and spent her time tapping her pen against her desk until Tina became annoyed and snatched it away from her. Her mind was filled with how to get Sharon back, what to say to her, if it was even worth it, if Amanda would be heartbroken over what had happened.
The orange sun had begun to sink into the forest by the time she got out of lecture, with Tina following her onto the campus grounds. The skies had cleared and the stars were coming out. A warm breeze rustled through the grass which was covered with a cold dew.
“Goddamn it, Laura!” Tina smacked Laura's back as they headed home. “Could you hold still for just a moment?”
“I couldn't help it, I can't stop thinking about her.”
“Whatever happened, she wasn't at Biochem review today,” Tina said, taking out her cell phone and listening to the messages.
“And you didn't tell me?” Laura turned to her, clenching her fists.
Tina held up her finger to quiet her as she listened to her phone. Laura just boiled before her, wondering if she should snatch the phone away.
“No point in you obsessing over it,” Tina said. “I'd hate you doing something idiotic like running all over campus looking for her and come back with some teeth missing.” She closed her phone and placed it in her backpack. “Still, I'm shocked that she'd hit you.”
“Don't remind me,” Laura said, feeling the throbbing return to her face. It might bruise, the last thing she needed at this point was to look battered.
“You think that...” Tina started off.
“That what?” Laura asked as they strolled past the cafeteria.
It was dinner time and the students were heading up the stairs en masse. She sighed and looked around the campus.
“Nah,” Tina said. “It's nothing. Hey, you want to join me for dinner?”
“You want to go out or stay here?”
“If you're paying I'd love go out later this week but right now I'm pressed for time... Let's see if the cafeteria can live up to your high standards.”
“Ugh,” Laura muttered. “I already ate here twice this week.”
Tina poked Laura in the stomach sharply, making her jump back. “You're skinny as it is. Some cheap food should fatten up that overbred body of yours.” She grinned. “Besides, no fair in you being so beautiful when you're around me.”
Laura rubbed her belly where Tina had poked her, it actually hurt a bit.
“And you have to stop being so prissy. Before long some jealous girl will kick your ass if you keep acting that way but can't defend yourself.”
“I'll get you to stand up for me,” Laura said, rolling her eyes. “You're practically a man. In fact I have never seen you naked to prove otherwise.”
Tina's smile broadened and she grabbed Laura by the hand, dragging her up the stairs. “Oh, you wouldn't want to find out.”
They headed into the large cafeteria which was comprised of many circular tables scattered along the first floor with a variety of stands serving different kinds of food at the corners of the floorspace.
Bright light coming from flickering neon lamps hanging from the ceiling made Laura squint. There was a second floor terrace with another eating area at the back of the building that had two staircases leading up to it. Since there were food stands all along the walls, the windows were set higher up and she couldn't see the outside-unsure if she would miss Sharon walking past in the most off chance and be able to run out and meet her.
“Here,” Tina shoved a tray at Laura, who almost dropped it.
They were surrounded by the hum of dozens of conversations with only random words from different mouths surfacing briefly from the tumult but never giving any sense to the noise.
“What are you going to have?”
“I want Chinese,” Tina said, walking over to the booth.
“I'm pretty sure the cook is Mexican,” Laura replied.
“It's the thought that counts,” she replied leaving Laura in the middle of the cafeteria, surrounded by the ebb and flow of words.
There was a sub stand, a Chinese stand, some kind of “home cooking” that always made her stomach turn, fried food of varying cholesterol levels, and a salad bar. The soup stand was closed for dinner, unfortunately, given that all she wanted was something light and hot.
Instead walked over to the salad bar and threw a variety of ingredients on her plate along with ranch dressing that had too many lumps in it for her taste. She rejoined Tina at one of the four checkout lines.
Tina had a plate full of noodles, rice, egg rolls, chicken, and bean sprouts. She had also stolen the soy sauce bottle. It easily looked to be over a pound of food.
“That's all you're having?” Tina asked. “Don't make me check if your ribs aren't showing.”
“No,” Laura replied. “I just don't have an appetite. I normally eat more than this.”
“I should hope so,” Tina said. “It's no wonder that Chrissie knocked you down like you were such a lightweight. And isn't she like half of your size?”
“Enough,” Laura said, glaring at Tina-which didn't help because she always just closed her eyes and smiled disarmingly.
“I'll let you eat some off of my plate,” Tina said as they reached the checkout. The middle aged woman looked at their discrepant meals through her bifocals.
“Together?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Tina said, pulling out a ten dollar bill from her pocket. “It's not as if she's really eating that much.” She then led Laura over to a table towards the terrace. It was vacant, if not dirty from the two trays with half-eaten meals abandoned on it.
“Here?” Laura asked as she sat down at the table. There were ten places, each with a chair that had a squishy black vinyl cushion.
“Yes, princess,” Tina replied, sitting beside her. “I swear you really piss me of sometimes.” She skewered a piece of chicken with her fork. “Open up.”
“I'm not hungry,” Laura said.
“I bought this to share,” Tina said, pushing the food in Laura's face.
Laura reluctantly took a bite.
“Good?” Tina asked as she started on the noodles and rice.
Laura nodded as she tried not to choke on the greasy sweet chicken. She couldn't handle an entire meal of this and decided to start on her salad before Tina force fed her again.
