so i've been here for one and a half weeks. collected impressions of that time:
-even though my cab was twenty minutes late on an already short time-schedule, i still got to the airport enough on time to be annoyed that my plane to laguardia was running an hour late. somehow, i talked myself on a different plane going to newark and got in at the right time. i felt like a very savvy traveler.
-driving home from new jersey, my parent's said, "look, there's the skyline." and i looked. and i didn't see it. finally, i saw the empire state building and life felt better. but i realized that, 3.5 years later, i'm still looking for the twin towers and the skyline without them still just doesn't look right.
-i had a paper to write at home. i'm pretty convinced i wrote the worst paper ever, as i spent so little time on it. i'm very much avoiding checking my grades for the quarter.
-walking around park slope was so nice. hadn't done that in awhile. franny's pizza was amazing. i just realized i've had very little pizza since i've been home. i should rectify that before i leave.
-i spent most of my time with emma, lutful, and rachel. i'm used to having a more expanded social life at home, but seeing just these guys was awfully nice too.
-hole, the only bar we go to because you can sneak in before the bouncer, had a bouncer that we got caught by. however, the fact that rachel had a fake ID was enough to let all three of us in. don't understand how that worked. talked to a woman from turkey, and a homophobic guy from russia. now, friday nights at hole (the night we were there) is dyke night. don't understand what this guy from russia was doing there, or why we ended up talking to him.
-went to the march 19 peace rally outside a recruiting station in brooklyn. watched some war resisters' league people get arrested, including emma's mom's friend. got interviewed by New York 1, our local cable tv news station, after everyone around me declined to be quoted. watched myself on TV later that night, as i said something incredibly deep: "it's been two years since we invaded iraq...and we're still in iraq, and people are still dying." god, i hate watching myself on tv.
-baked a cake for lutful with the canadian flag on top. we screwed up where the patches of red are supposed to go, and practically dyed my kitchen in red food coloring. my parents said it was like we were 8 again.
-used an epipen on rachel, as she had an allergic reaction right before she had to get on a bus to go back to college. kind of scary, though the epipen does seem to be pretty idiot-proof. chinatown restaurants seem to be dangerous for rachel.
-went shopping in my neighborhood, which always makes me happy. i like to go to stores that absolutely do not exist in chicago and laugh because they're two blocks away from me, which proves that my brooklyn neighborhood is therefore so much cooler than hyde park.
-i missed a lot of usas conference calls. oops.
-went to queens, had lutful's mom's cooking for the last time in awhile, and it was delicious as usual.
