thefourthvine says that SGA's motto is "you will be assimilated," and this weekend it happened to me. Assimilation occurred while I was reading
this post and the subsequent comments. I suddenly realized that I had an enormous smile on my face; that's how and when I knew. I could probably figure out exactly when I was reading it, and mark the instant not that I fell in love with SGA, but the instant I realized that I was in love with SGA. (I'm not sure when I actually fell in love; that's lost in all the wonderful stories in that fandom I've read.)
I feel simultaneously distressed and exhilarated -- distressed because I really, really do not want another fandom, and exhilarated because I love this place! Oh my god, the fanfiction is amazing, astounding, wonderful, and oh so weird. And there's so fucking much of it! Yesterday, I found four stories I loved so much that I instantly sent the URLs off to friends, demanding they read them. I also found three LOTR RPS stories, but. Damn.
My LJ life has evolved into two journals: this one, which so far has been mostly stories plus a few essays exclusively focused on LOTR RPS and the LOTR RPS fandom; and
mira_reads, which started out as a place to record my thoughts and feelings as I re-read LOTR last summer, but is now a kind of diary of the books, movies, and television shows I'm enjoying.
So I guess this is a public service announcement, or maybe I should say this is a warning: henceforth this LJ will also contain babbling about SGA. Probably stories, definitely an essay or two. I don't have a lot to say at the moment about SGA except YAY! and Cool! but I reckon that will change.
Dang. Another fandom: how the hell did this happen? It's all that Rodney McKay's fault, I'm sure. Such the cutie . . . See the photos I posted
here as evidence, or
read this thread about how hot David fucking Hewlett is. And he is; lord, lord, he is.
And yes, I'm writing it, or at least trying to. We'll see how that goes. I love stories set in the future, so I'm thinking along those lines, but I also wish they were still cut off from Earth, so maybe something will take the Daedalus out of action for a while. Hmmm.
What follows is mostly for me: it's a list of URLs that I've found useful as I learn more about the show:
Here's throughadoor's hilarious description of SGA.
svmadelyn's excellent
list of SGA links.
I'd never heard of
thefourthvine until SGA, but she does wonderful "Fandoms I Have Loved" posts; here's her
SGA FIHL post, as well as her
description of the show. Arduinna's
SGA Handbook.
Finally, and related only because
rageprufrock writes fucking brilliant SGA stories,
her essay about writing. Another fandom. Goddammit.
