One sour thing in this wonderful day, and I can't spare my thoughts on it, though I cannot comment it in any meaningful way, since it's beyond my grasp. Did they think the same that I did? Impossible.
When we first saw the reports on CNN about Katrina I thought that it's not that bad - it was raining like cats and dogs, the wind was blowing like crazy, but I had the opportunity to experience something similar in Switzerland, where the wind simply blew me away once. I thought: it's okay, that there's an extraordinary reportage on it, it's a natural catastrophy, but aren't they overdoing it a bit? The continuous live coverage from Baton Rouge, Biloxi, New Orleans, and some other neighboring cities just made me angry - in Baton Rouge there was only a light shower. Biloxi was getting worse every moment, and when I realized that the image through the car window is shattered because the window is actually broken to dozens of pieces, I got it, that it's serious. It was ridiculous though, how they showed lamps outside of a large building falling off: the storm itself didn't do that much damage, I guess.
But then.
And where have they been? Why wasn't there any reaction from the administratory side? Do they despise the area that much?* Did they really spend the money? And what's up with George W. forgetting his routine "I'm You Friend People, I'm One Of You"?
The expression on his father's face is memorable - he might have thought: "Is this my own son? This primitve peasant?! Oh, come on." I wish George W. would just disappear from the stage now. With his precious staff, of course.
This was something foreseen - why couldn't they handle it? Yes, even third world countries perform better in prevention. Yes, the victims of the 2004 December tsunami had better chances to survive - the great majority living closer to nature. You call this civilization?
It's unbearable to know that nothing had happened for almost a whole week. It points out the weaknesses of their precious administration - there was the huge amount of money available to get into yet another pointless war, but there's no way helping their own people?
And what
the Rivkins and Rav Nemes did are doing is what everyone would call taking responsibility. There are good examples, too.
There are even more questions arising.
*we all know how catastrophic it is in itself - it's southest of South, with high illiteracy, poor infrastructure in the countryside, high crime-rates etc. Yes, I'd feel shame in their place looking at the state South was in in some regards.
