first of the year end recap meme posts: fanfiction, and an update

Longest Story Written (oneshot) : I Will Follow You Into the Dark at 7115 words.
Shortest Story Written (and posted): The Beautiful at 112 words.

My favorite story of this year: Hmmm. I think I’ve done some of my best writing, ever, in Supernatural fandom recently, including most especially “ The Calling” and “ Things Gone Sideways” among others. I had a lot of fun with “ Damage Control.” Overall, I think my favorite might be “ Antebellum” though, for Avatar: the Last Airbender. I'm proud of myself for finishing “The Damned” though.

My best story this year: Best story? Oh god. I might have to go with “ The Hollow Men” because I like what I did without really stating very much. I feel like it was a lot of showing more than telling. I honestly don’t know, though. Again, some of my best quality writing has probably come out of recent Supernatural challenges. See the longer list at the end of this longass meme.

Best received story: “ The Calling” got an incredibly positive response, actually to my surprise. I wouldn’t have pegged that one as a favorite. “ I Came O’er the Sleeping Sea” also got a rec (holy crap!) that surprised me. “ Antebellum” now has more favorites on FFN than THE OWNER’S MANUAL AND GUIDE to my relief since the former is way better.

Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: “ Listen to the Rain” has zero reviews and I actually really like it. I'm pretty surprised it doesn’t have more of a response, too, since angst in Death Note tends to be pretty popular. It’s probably the fact that it has Misa. But I wanted to write about Misa after Light dies and her confusion and loss and I'm pleased with what came out, particularly given I don’t like her very much. “ Supernova” and “ Portions for Foxes” are other stories in Doctor Who that I really like, though I know that “Supernova” is off-putting because it’s in second person and both of them are angst-fests, which isn’t everyone’s cuppa. (Particularly, it seems, in this fandom, which is understandable.)

Most fun story: “ Cosplay, Conventions, and Castiel” was ridiculous and fun to write, because it was…ridiculous. And one of those things that just happened Because I/Katie Felt Like It which can produce some pretty fun things. But really, I think “ Implicated” wins out here, because a) it is L/Light, b) it is porn and c) the post-it notes crack me up and I can’t help appreciating making myself giggle. “ Project Wishful Thinking” and “ East of the Sun and West of the Moon” are also nominees in this category, though. Particularly the latter, but that may not be fair as it is pure and unadulterated crack in a way I seldom do anymore in fic.

Hardest story to write: “ Brothers and Other Breakables” was hard, because the subject matter is essentially taking a children’s show and tacking deathfic and torture onto it, and it was difficult in the sense of challenging as well. I think I struggled most with “ Damage Control” though, because it took ages to come out how I wanted it to, and even then I wasn’t sure about it, and honestly, I fretted about that thing for weeks. And had the idea for longer. And couldn’t decide whether or not to post it - and so on. The same with “ I Will Follow You Into the Dark” because it was weird and I wasn’t sure about the characterization or the idea - and it was also long, and took me several days to write. Most of my fic I actually write in one sitting, believe it or not - just sit down and go. But there are a few that I actually agonize over.  “Daughter of Babylon” was also a challenge because it’s a pairing I adore taken in an entirely different (darker) direction.

"Holy crap, that's *wrong*, even for you" story: Thank you sharp_teeth . “ Andronicus” I don’t think I can reread too often because it is just nasty. In a way I don’t usually touch. “ The Sky Is Darkening Like A Stain” is disturbing too. And “ Remember You Are Mortal, Remember You Will Die” that I just posted is disturbing in an all too realistic way. “ Bloodied Eyes” is also pretty bad, along the lines of my nominee for this one last year (“Undone”). “ Happiness Is A Warm Gun” is also pretty terrible, though comparatively…could easily be worse. I write a lot in this category! And cringe at myself about it, but keep doing it anyway.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: It’s not so much a story, but the collection of drabbles to songs that went with the fanmix “I Am My Father’s Son” really got me thinking about Curufin, pressing deeply into his character, his motivations, and why he thinks the way he does. I may have more solid ideas about him and why he is the way he is than almost any other character, because really that whole fanmix turned into one massive character building exercise. I also could say “ The Way of the Wicked” because it was exploring a more twisted, darker, and more insane side of Maeglin than I’d taken before (even, and that’s saying something) but I think “I Am My Father’s Son” was a deeper exploration of character in a lot of ways. Also longer, so that may be an unfair comparison.

Biggest disappointment: Hum. Silmarillion fandom still hates me ignores me. I'm deeply sorry that I seem to have lost some of my muse for a few fandoms over the past year as others come in, too. Why can’t I maintain them all? I don’t think that’s what this question means but that’s my answer!

Biggest surprise: Supernatural fanfiction? I was totally all like I WON’T WRITE IT, I'm NOT INTERESTED. Or Avatar fanfiction even more so, for the same reason. I ended up writing both, and with great enthusiasm. Also surprising - the positive reception I’ve been getting for my writing lately. Appreciated, but surprising. And that’s not false modesty, I swear. >>

Most unintentionally telling story: Still don’t know what this question means. “ Four Ways Light Yagami Never Died” is pretty intentionally telling about the whole ‘I want Death Note AUs!’ thing. “After Life, Death” is also very telling - it’s angstfestilicious, it stars Sam and Castiel getting thrown together, and a lot of hurt with comparatively little comfort, all things that I am big fans of. It was for a prompt, though. >> I honestly don’t know this year. The sheer amount of horror I wrote this year probably says something about a shift in me or my writing, but we’re not going to press too deeply on that one.

Sexiest story: I wrote sexy porn this year! Probably “ Song of Songs” for Aredhel/Celegorm, with “ Implicated” for L/Light as a fairly close second. I really like both those fics. “Daughter of Babylon” is also quite sexy to me, in its own way. But less explicit.

Favorite summaries:
Castiel finds himself at a convention. With Winchesters. Also starring a merch table, Becky, a costume contest and the Apocalypse. No, not that one. - Cosplay, Conventions, and Castiel

Nan Elmoth is full of shadows, and Aredhel is not one of them. - The Woods Are Lonely, Dark, and Deep

It's so easy to fall into orbit. - Tyger, Tyger

After the end. Mai reappears, Katara is defensive, and Sokka is surprisingly aware of the situation. Zuko's just unconscious, and manages to make it all about him anyway. - Glory; Lightning

Zuko doesn't understand any of this. A scar, an Avatar, and a slightly concerned Firebender. - Antebellum

There are some things you never want to have to explain to your sister. Dismembered bodies is up there. Definitely. - Hurricane

Favorite opening line(s):"When Amy was a girl, she had an imaginary friend,” from “ We All Believe (In Us, You, Fairytales)” is probably my only nominee in this category. I don’t tend to like my first lines nearly as much as my last lines.

Favorite closing line(s):
“He closed his eyes and listened to his own heart thud against the stone.”- Forevermore

“He doesn't head back toward the police station. Just starts walking, with a vague thought of continuing and continuing and continuing until he gets somewhere that is anywhere but here.” - The After

“But then it was only hail again, and he slammed the door against the wind. He listened to the hinges rattle and could almost imagine his cousin's tattered ghost tapping at the door, asking his way in.” - The Sky Is Falling

“Life goes on without me, Sam could have said. Or, Indiana needs you. Or just, thank you. He stares blankly up at the ceiling, unable to find the words, and thinks about the stars whirling ceaselessly overhead, pinpricks of angel’s grace in a darkened sky.” - Forever and Also

"Sam smiles. He can almost hear the hum of the Impala and the beat and blast of Metallica through old speakers. Everything’s okay. The snow is quiet and his mind is quiet and his body is winding down.

“Dean,” Sam says, “It’s snowing.” -I Shall Not Live in Vain

Favorite line(s) from anywhere:
"There is a brutality here that his subtle soul abhors. And Ryuk watches him, contorted at impossible angles, as though Light is a curiosity of taxidermy, shot, stuffed and posed on L's shelf.” - And This Is All There Ever Was

"Jesus Christ! You know what it's like, finding out that your brother is a psycho freak?” Yes, actually, I'd be tempted to say. It was pretty nice. While it lasted.” - Hurricane
“His thoughts are all full of pieces and shards of broken glass that it’s easy to cut himself on if he doesn’t step carefully. He doesn’t have the energy right now to step carefully, and they rip him to shreds with every twitch he makes.” - Forever and Also

"He’s been someone’s problem his whole life. Figures that wouldn’t change. John’s problem, Dean’s problem, heaven’s problem, hell’s problem. He’s just the original Problem Child. Hilarious. (Oh, come on, at least a little bit.)” - Things Gone Sideways

“To his surprise, Lucifer obeyed, the talons slashing his throat wide open. His blood spilled out on the table and Jess and Dad and Dean stopped eating for a moment to watch it. Dean proceeded to fingerpaint a smiley face on his white plate, and Sam choked on his own blood trying to laugh.” - The Sky Is Darkening Like A Stain

Story I haven't yet written, but intend to: I want to continue “After Life, Death” possibly. Potentially Sherlock fic. Fanfiction of Niko reading Winnie the Pooh to an ickle Caliban. I do have four pages of prompts to pull from…and new ideas coming in all too frequently. And Death Note porn. The Death Note porn is vital.

Goals for next year: Write more Silmarillion crack work on my original shit. I need to do more writing for myself, also, and that would be a good way to do it. I have some half formed ideas floating around in my head, I just need to sculpt them a little more.

Top Five Ten Stories From 2010: I feel a wee bit egoistical for not being able to narrow it down further. But I think this was a good year for my fanfiction. And I figure this is my chance to pimp myself out.

No Rest for the Wicked: This story is my favorite of my 289475 renditions of Celegorm's death. I like the Caranthir POV (who is actually one of my favorite POVs to write) and I think it is sad in a more understated way than some of my other fics have been. I'm just very proud of how this turned out. And it is a sad moment between brothers fic which is one of my favorite things. What?

The Way of the Wicked: Maeglin, darkly. And I like it. It's twisted, and it has a whole theme where Maeglin knows that there is something very wrong with him but at the same time doesn't, really, and it doesn't help him. This did partly stem from another fic that was...delightful but less than delightful if you know what I mean, but I think I like my rendition anyway.

Forevermore: I don't often end up liking my short things, but I like this one. Maglor isn't one of my favorites but I still ended up being very pleased with what happened with this piece.

Hurricane: The Dexter fic I really really like. I'm a sucker for Deb-finds-out fics, and I like my Dexter-voice in this one, and and and generally I've just been very pleased with it and that hasn't changed, which is even more alarming.

Antebellum: Far and away the best Avatar fic I have written, maybe one of my better ones this year. I like writing Zuko and this one was a chance to put Zuko and Aang together in a gen way, which is also fun. I don't actually know why I like this so much. I think it's just a matter of the story is sweet and fairly simple but it came together in the way that I wanted.

Damage Control: I think I just like this because it is a mashup of like, six things I wanted. Like Doctor!injury! And Doctor meeting Torchwood including Owen! And things like that. But I do think it came together fairly well for all that.

The Sky Is Darkening Like a Stain: I'm going to come right out and say it - I have a thing for torture fic. And I have a thing for making Sam suffer. And I'm just very pleased with this fic and what it does, and that it was in the words of the few commenters, 'brutal' because that's exactly what I wanted it to be. I like the imagery and I like the writing so there. :|

I Shall Not Live in Vain: Also deathfic. This one for Supernatural, and oh sigh, I'm so mean. But I like, again, that this is a fairly 'quiet' fic without a whole lot of noise or drama. It feels very understated and I'm really into that of late. I have no idea why. Or maybe I do, but at any rate - I'm just very pleased with how this ended up turning out.

How to Lose Friends and Influence People: Another characterization fic that I'm absurdly proud of. Especially given that I felt my Silm muse was flagging and this fic reminded me (or made me feel, anyway) that I still have it. And I am a sucker for dysfunctional family relationships, and this is one I love to explore.

The theme for fanfiction this year is harder to pin down than last year. A certain obsession with ambiguous endings and character death, probably. And hurt/comfort. I got really into hurt/comfort this year, of which “Fever” is probably the single most shameless example.

But the ambiguous endings were a big one, too. (“The City of Dreadful Night” is probably the worst for this.)

Other notes: Yuletide was overall disappointing in terms of finding stories I really wanted to read, but I have a few recs that I'll post when I'm not deluging the place with memes and a half, and:

How to Lose Friends and Influence People | for sargent_snarky | Silmarillion | Curufin doesn't know what to do with his son half the time.
Beginnings | for sakru909 | Death Note | The boy, his social workers said, was...peculiar.
Milo's Tollbooth | for firebluespinel | The Phantom Tollbooth | Milo returns.

For those of you I still owe presents - those will also be up, as soon as possible! (And to those watching my fic journal...there's going to be a bit of a deluge in the next couple days. I'm terribly sorry. >>

I have also realized that I should make a list of the fic I've written that's inspired by other fic. Because there are a few.
