So I have had this in the works for ages and ages but have not gotten around to posting it until...now. What this says about me? ...that I put things off that I'm doing to put other things off? ...yeaaah.
No, I'm not sure about that. Spoilers for series 1, 3, and 5.
TOP FIVE NEW!WHO EPISODES PICSPAM
(+quotes +commentary)
5. THE SHAKESPEARE CODE
"Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
"I might use that."
"You can't, it's someone else's."
This one - the monster is corny, sure, no lie. But I still love this episode for a lot of reasons, not least because it makes me giggle like a little crazy and that is one of my favorite things about Doctor Who. The giggling like a little crazy parts. Also all the Shakespeare-references to Shakespeare and the Doctor and Martha's first trip together and the Doctor being a fanboy just a little bit. I also realized putting this picspam together that oh my lord, Martha has the most priceless facial expressions in the world. I seriously probably could have made this picspam just awesome Martha expressions from this episode. I mean, Ten's expression-quirks are obvious, but I'd never really thought about Martha's before.
...anyway, goofy or not, I gave it a spot on this list because it is fun and even if Donna is my favorite companion, Martha is a close second.
4. THE BEAST BELOW
"It came because it couldn't stand to watch your children cry. What if you were really old, and really kind and alone? Your whole race dead, no future. What couldn't you do then? If you were that old, and that kind, and the very last of your kind.... you couldn't just stand there and watch children cry."
So I wasn't sold on Eleven until much later than this, but this was the episode where I reluctantly went 'welllll okay I can see what people are saying.' But I think the really significant thing about this episode for me is the fact that Amy figures it out and stops the Doctor from doing something that'd really destroy him. I love it when companions save the day and seriously, second day? Good job Amy. Also the hug at the end is just adorable. I really do like Amy quite a bit.
And the star-whale is adorable if you ask me.
3. VAMPIRES OF VENICE
"Hey, look at this. I got my spaceship, I got my boys... my work here is done."
"We are not her "boys.""
"Yeah, we are."
"Yeah, we are."
RORY that is all I have to say. Rory. In general. I adore Rory, I'm not going to lie, and this is his first real appearance and idevenk, he's just awesome. The beginning bit with the Doctor in the cake is hilarious, and Rory and the mama's boy and his your mom! joke. That's really what has this episode on here, is Rory in all his glory. Also the quote (from Rory, what) to the Doctor: "You know what's dangerous about you? It's not that you make people take risks. It's that you make them want to impress you. You make it so they don't want to let you down. You have no idea how dangerous you make people to themselves when you're around."
Other things I love: people actually telling the Doctor off. And also it's just so true.
2. THE EMPTY CHILD/THE DOCTOR DANCES
"Funny little human brains. How do you get around in those things?"
"When he's stressed he likes to insult species. Cuts himself shaving - does half an hour on life forms he's cleverer than."
There are so many reasons this episode is far and away my favorite with Nine. (Who I love, I just don't love as much as Ten, but really I should babble about him more. Deserves more love. Anyway.) Firstly, Jack Harkness shows up. And I am sorry to be like everyone ever, but I love Jack just a little. More than a little? And secondly, related to this, the Doctor and Jack's interactions, which is really just about par for the course for the rest of their time together, and thirdly, the creature in this - 'the empty child' as it were - is awesome and creepy and probably the one that's freaked me out most actually in all I've seen. And finally, the happy ending, and how freaking happy the Doctor is that it works out that way, because it really just says something about him, right there.
Are you my mummy?
1. THE SOUND OF DRUMS
"I've been alone ever since. But not anymore. Don't you see? All we've got is each other!"
"Are you asking me out on a date?"
...I couldn't not. The Master arc might be my favorite arc in all seasons, ever. I love Simm!Master (must include caveat because I still have not gotten to any of old!Who) and it has Jack and Martha and Ten and the Master and it is just a perfect storm of awesome. And this is probably my favorite of the three. There is so much tension and the phone conversation oh how charged is that. And every scene with the Master ever? And we get glimpses of Gallifrey and History Ancient and all of that.
This episode just pushed all my buttons and kept on pushing them. Having pretty much all my favorite people didn't hurt either.
