What: An amalgamation of many fictional Alter Worlds/dimensions, pulled from fantasy novels or comics of the more arcane nature. The most recognizable being works by Simon R. Green, Hellblazer, Neil Gaiman.
There's a pocket universe hidden inside the mundane world, things there are both similar and alien. People mostly stay out of the Hidden City, but there are times when then stumble upon it. The City itself isn't hidden, but most never know of it, or ignore signs of it's presence because it doesn't fit within their worldview. To enter or leave is easy, staying away, not so much.
Quirks:
- The Hidden City never sees the light of day, while the moon does rise and set, the sun is never visible. The streets are lit by gas lights, neon signs, street lamps and other electrical or magical fox fires.
- There's a lot of ways into the City, and just as many ways out. People do stumble in by accident. In a way, it's separate from the normal world. People end up in the City for a lot of reasons.
- It's common to have someone talk about the end of the world as we know it every other week or so. Everyone get's used to it. Those that don't tend not to last very long.
- The majority of the people there are from the 21st century, though there are regions with mutable time, and time travellers from the past, or possible futures. Dimension hopping happens too.
- The size and boundaries of the City is always changing. Not only that, but there are places which are only accessible through circumstance, and therefore don't have a known location. They say there's a bar where you can meet your younger self...and a church where you can speak directly to God. Whatever happens, the City always seems bigger than it's boundaries should allow. Familiar streets have mutable distances, and even if you know an area well, it can be a maze.
- Belief and willpower are major players here. Nothing is as it seems, and physical laws that govern the universe? Out the window.
- Traffic can be murder. It is advised that you not try and operate a vehicle yourself unless it is an armoured tank if you don't wish to be eaten by traffic. The cabbies all have unions who are unafraid of expressing their displeasure, and the horses run their own carriage company, thank you very much. Taxi's are scary, scary things, think the movie chase New York style driving, but worse.
- Pretty much anything and everything can happen or can be found there, as long as you can afford the price. Money will often be the least of your worries, barter tends to go a lot further.
